Join Us for a Moderate 5 Miles in Gunpowder Falls State Park: Pleasantville - Bottom Trails with an Optional Post Hike Meal!
Hike along the Gunpowder River, then ascend to the exceedingly beautiful rail bed of the defunct Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad. This hike winds up being one of the prettiest anywhere around and I was amazed that hiking in the Baltimore are could rival some I have driven much further for similar beauty. Little Gunpowder Creek is the star of this hike. If you're into geopolitical boundaries the entire length of the Little Gunpowder Creek is the boarder between Baltimore and Harford Counties. So when you're done hiking in one county you cross over and go hiking in the next. There are bridge foundations that still stand over the Little Gunpowder Creek where trains crossed over the river way back in days now long gone. The parts of the loop that follow the old railroad bed have a spectacular view of the area where the land was raised to for the railroad as well as where parts of the hills were carved out. Come out and see just what a hidden gem of a hike this is for yourself!
This is a great hike for those looking to build stronger hiking legs because while it is still on the shorter side at just about 5 miles, it is pretty hilly. While there is nothing too steep or too long, they are a constant throughout the length of this beautiful hike. The rolling hills are what makes this a moderate and not an easy hike.

We break down into groups no larger than 15 hikers per leader/sweep team for a more enjoyable experience for all of us and is better for the environment. Large groups really take away from the hiking experience. This also allows us to offer a variety of hike paces and for this particular hike you have 3 to choose from which allows us to be put together with those of a similar pace. Paces should be not only based on your preference but also your ability needs to be taken into consideration.
Pace Option 1: A "walk in the woods" or "social" pace which is great for those who want to soak up the nature 2.0mph. This pace will be offered if we get a leader to volunteer to lead it. As of now, we only have a leader for option 2.
Pace Option 2: A moderate pace of about 2.5-3.0 mph (Pace of an average hiker)
PLEASE put your pace preference in your RSVP so we can plan accordingly
We hike rain or shine. Click here to see an up to the minute forecast for where we will be hiking.
To carpool from the Baltimore/Laurel area, please meet at Savage Station. Click here for directions to Savage Station.
If you can drive or want to carpool from additional locations such as the DC area, please post your location in the comment section below. For those who need a ride, reach out to the drivers. Make friends, and support the environment - by just offering a ride!

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.
Fido is Welcome on this Hike
