25th Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup

Receive a MONTH of UNLIMITED FREE Hikes with The Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group for Volunteering for This Event!

The Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup has become a decisive catalyst for progress that ignites people throughout the watershed with the Alice Ferguson Foundation's community spirit. The largest regional event of its kind, the Cleanup provides a transforming experience that engages citizens and community leader and generates momentum for change. Active MEMBERS of The Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group who participate in this volunteer event will receive a month of free hikes (regular 1-2 dollar hikes only, sorry, no free camping trips or special events) with The Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group. The free hikes will be for the 30 day time period immediately following this volunteer event. These are provided by me personally, and are a token of my appreciation for helping us take care of some of the trails and areas we frequent! In order to receive your free hikes, you MUST RSVP on this page (contacting me after the event to let me know you were there but did not sign up will not result in receipt of this incentive). After the event, please confirm with me that you did attend and participated in the event for its duration. Thanks so much for your time and for participating in this community building event. Not only is this for a great cause, it will be a ton of fun too and I appreciate that you are considering helping us to improve this outstanding area in such a state of need!

Activity Description

  • Volunteers should arrive by 9am and will work no later than 12pm (unless they really, really want to!)
  • If you have your own gloves, please bring them along. Thank you for your understanding! Feel free to bring along your own rakes or grabbers too.
  • Clothes and shoes may get dirty. Wear old clothing that is weather appropriate and bring extra layers. If working near water, waterproof boots or waders may be helpful.
  •  Not all cleanup sites are child-friendly or handicap accessible. Each cleanup site offers different amenities. Contact the site leader or check the notes listed for a specific site to determine site specifics.
  • Expect moderate-to-difficult work that requires lifting bags, bending over and walking on rocky/slippery terrain. Other less strenuous volunteer jobs such as volunteer check-in and recording data are also needed.
  • NPS_VolunteerServicesAgreement This Volunteer Services Agreement Form is required for all individual or groups that will be volunteering on cleanups which are located within a National Park, Forest, Battlefield, Seashore, etc… . Click here for the form. The form not only helps the parks keep track of volunteer involvement in their parks but it also covers volunteers in case of injury. This form should be filled out in advance and forwarded on to the parks Volunteer Coordinator; if unable to fill out the form in advance, it is fine to fill one out the day of the event then submit it to the park you worked at. Groups can fill out the Volunteer Services Agreement Form as a group, then attach a list of all the volunteers names to it as long as everybody in that group is over the age of 18; anyone under the age of 18 needs to have their own individual form filled out, which is to be signed by a parent or guardian

PLEASE remember the month of free hikes are NOT supplied by where you volunteer. They are provided by our group, Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group (MAHG) as a token of appreciation for your volunteering and is not owed per-se", but rather given as a thank you:) Also, this provides a way for anyone to hike with us, even if experience a financial hardship. I provide you with a 30 days of UNLIMNIED FREE hikes (regular hikes only and not special evens over 2 dollars) with the MAHG in turn for participating in volunteer on events on our calendar. I still use the honor system. However, you must contact me so I know you attended and so I can send you information on how you apply your free hikes. Please allow up to a week if notifying me via e-mail as I get hundreds of member e-mails daily. YOU MUST include your name, date of the volunteer event (we have many so I need to know which one you are reference), and what you did at the event. Thanks so much for volunteering and making a difference!

Hi there, do we get assigned a clean-up site or pick one? I don't see a link in the meetup...

hi Julia, i actually googled "25th annual Potomac.." and it took me to the site with this map where you would select the location you're interested in working at, http://trashnetwork.f... - then I contacted the person listed at that site and emailed them, and was told that i'm registered and given address to meet at. I'm guessing that after cleanup on Saturday, I'd just email Kelly to let her know that I participated.
