***WARNING! — Our calendar is VERY active ALL four seasons and may be beneficial to your health***
We are a very active group full of diverse people who enjoy a wide variety of activities, including but not limited to: hiking, trail maintenance, and environmental awareness activities with others while exploring a variety of locations throughout Maryland, DC, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia. Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group (MAHG) enjoys Mother Nature’s diversity as well as each other's and ALL are welcome to join. Our focus is on camaraderie and safety while having a ton of fun out on the trails — so a sense of humor is a must with us! Our leadership team consists of extraordinarily awesome, dedicated, and very appreciated volunteers who are some of the best in the region!
MAHG also offers several opportunities to give back by helping with maintaining trails throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and hosting and/or participating in other environmental stewardship and community building events and workshops. MAHG offers classes and certifications in Leave No Trace outdoor ethics, and our own highly regarded Outdoor Leadership Certification program. Additionally, MAHG has an active outreach program to help with educating others regarding the importance of taking care of our trails and our overall environment.
Whether you are a newbie or a very seasoned hiker, we are sure to have a hike or stewardship opportunity for you on our very active and varied calendar. We have many opportunities for you to unplug with us and get out with nature and out on the trails.
Why Join MAHG? — Our Mission brings people together to have good times and make friends while enjoying the benefits of the great outdoors in a safe and welcoming environment. As long as you are interested in hiking and/or stewardship, then Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group is the group for you. Whether you are looking to hike to lose weight, have never hiked a mile in your life, or are looking to rise up to the challenge of a 40+ mile ultra hike, we have a hike for you. Remember, we were all newbies once and we enjoy introducing others to hiking. Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group’s hikes and other activities are a great way to relieve stress, enjoy some exercise, and “unplug” while enjoying the variety of what Mother Nature has to offer throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
When Does MAHG Offer Hikes and Events? — We do it the morning, afternoon, after work, evening, darkest of night, every weekend day, and all year ‘round and average 20 hikes each week. Get your mind out of the gutter ‘cause we are talking about hiking, stewardship, and outdoor education here. Seasonally, we offer weekday day hikes in addition to our variety of after work hikes.
Where MAHG is Active — Anywhere within the Mid-Atlantic region. Regarding hikes, they range from very easy social sneaker hikes on paved paths along gentle streams and clear lakes, to very strenuous, steep climbs and rock scrambles to mountain summits. We visit Shenandoah National Park, George Washington National Forest, and the Appalachian Trail almost every weekend. We strive to offer at least one easy, moderate, and strenuous hike within 60 miles of Baltimore, DC, and Northern Virginia each weekend. Additionally, we have cookouts, white water floats, hike out/paddle backs, cave trips, natural water slides hikes, Appalachian Trail section hikes, camping trips, volunteer offerings, and last but certainly not least, our very popular Monuments in the Moonlight hikes. Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group was featured on the front page of the weekend section of The Washington Post newspaper!
MAHG is about Promoting the Many Health Benefits of Hiking, Connecting People with Nature, Community Building, Giving Back/Stewardship, Education, and Excellent Camaraderie — With safety and camaraderie in mind while emphasizing having fun out on the trails! As a group, we limit our hikes to small groups for the comfort and consideration of others and to better enjoy the environment. Hiking in large groups is not fun for you or anyone else on the trail or our leadership team. Giving back is important to us and our members and we pledge to practice Leave No Trace (LNT) outdoor ethics and are a partner with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. We are also proud to be a Gold level Alliance Member of the American Hiking Society and participate in the "Adopt and Acre" program in the Appalachian Mountains offered through The Nature Conservancy. MAHG frequently offers volunteer and trail maintenance opportunities and other community building events, so we welcome you to come on out and join us in making a difference in our parks, community, and the overall environment.
Who Should Join MAHG — Simply put, you! Whether you are young, old, working, single, in a committed relationship, retired, laid off, shy, talkative, energetic, geeky, lazy (but hopefully you don't want to be or we just might have a problem with this one), recovering from an injury, social, or a competitive speed hiker, this is a group for you. We do more than embrace our diversity — we thrive on it!
Today’s fast paced and technologically dominated society can degrade a person’s psychological, physical, and emotional wellbeing. Many people are trapped within an indoor and plugged-in lifestyle that is overwhelmingly stressful. Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group promotes connecting people with nature by getting them outdoors and unplugging to decrease stress, get fitter and healthier, and get inspired!
We hope to see you on the trail or at a stewardship event soon and let’s have good times…
Whatever your walk of life, it can be richer by walking it with MAHG!
