A Light in the Dark: Night Photography for All

  • Nov 16, 2013 · 4:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

A beautiful historic bridge, a couple of ornate buildings, and some lights in the dark.

This photo shoot will start in Eagle Landing State Park, from which there is a perfect view of the Haddam/East Haddam Swing Bridge, and the Goodspeed Opera House and Gelston Restaurant buildings on the other side of the river.  At nighttime, the bridge and buildings are brightly illuminated, creating a beautiful light in the dark and reflections in the river.  This past summer marked the Swing Bridge's 100th anniversary and Mid CT Photo members were present to photograph the daytime festivities. You can also drive across the bridge to take photos up close.

See daytime photos of the swing bridge and opera house:  http://www.meetup.com/Mid-CT-Photography-Meetup/photos/15509202/

Plan to arrive around 4 pm so that you will have plenty of time to stake good locations and set up your equipment before night fall, and catch some blue light.

If anyone wants to meetup before the shoot to ask questions, etc., we will meet at a nearby restaurant about an hour before.  Details and a separate event posting are forthcoming.

For members who may be new to night photography, a list of recommended equipment (in addition to a camera) to bring to this photo shoot will be posted in the next few days.

Important note:  this event is weather-dependent.  In case of inclement weather or soggy ground, the event may be postponed to the following Saturday, or to the first Saturday in December.

This will be the first in a series of night shoots that will be scheduled throughout the year in different venues around Connecticut.  If you have never taken night photos, now will be your chance to learn from experienced night shooters.

It was good planning to do the shoot last evening, at the moment you can barely see the Opera House from Eagles Landing... (Sunday, 11/17, 6 PM)

    November 16, 2013

    • Kathy W.

I wish I had seen this message sooner because I do have extra tripods and am making a habit of bringing them with me. I hope you can your tripod back soon, but if not, you can always borrow mine at a future photo shoot.

What could be better than a full moonrise over the Goodspeed in November and it wasn't snowing!

Nice job planning the event. Thanks

Hello everyone. I am new to the group and look forward to learning from everyone! I would love to come to this event but have to work until 5. Do you think getting there around 5:30 would be too late?

    November 15, 2013

    • Kathy W.

Hi Brienne, I cannot guarantee that we will still be there at 5:30. We might be at Eagle Landing or across the river up close to the Opera house by then. If you miss this night shoot, never fear, there will be another one.

Hi all. I'm new to this group and look forward to attending this tomorrow night. Would be very interested in finding somewhere on this site those helpful "tips" on taking night photos! Thanks.!

Anthony, go under the MORE tab, to FILES. I have a guideline for night photography posted there. Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow.

Thanks for that excellent guide Vicki! I currently am using a Nikon D-80 with a Sigma 17-50 mm, (2.8) lens. I also use Nikon VR[masked] mm (4.5 -5.6) lens. Looking forward to the "shoot" tomorrow.

As much as I enjoy night photography and with this location being pretty close to home, unfortunately I have a conflict (Sacred Heart Fencing tournament at Brown) and won't be able to join the fun...

  • Vicki M.

I will be posting a file tomorrow with tips and info for night photography. I will contain basic information. The draft is done and I just need to clean it up. Hopefully Wednesday night we can give an overview for Saturday.

In addition to the equipment Warren mentioned, I would recommend you also bring a flashlight with you. Eagle Land State Park can get very dark at night since there are very few lights.

    November 7, 2013

  • Warren

It should be said that there is certain equipment that you will need for this. First is a sturdy tripod. Next, a cable release (or wireless remote shutter release); something that can trip the shutter without you touching the camera. You should have a camera capable of making long exposures and it should have a manual exposure mode. For anyone not familiar with their gear, now is the time to dig out that instruction book and practice.

    November 7, 2013

    • Kathy W.

Warren, thank you for this useful information. I will bring an extra tripod and remote shutter release, just in case someone does not have one.

I'm BRAND new to the group, and night photography as well. I'm 80% sure my schedule will allow me to attend, I'll RSVP for certain in the next few days...this sounds like a good time! jeff

This would be a good opportunity to learn from others. You can take your time with RSVP--there's no deadline or cap on attendance numbers.
