When we met at the base of the mountain, hoping to photograph the last sunset of 2011, it was grey and dismal and our chances were slim. But if the sky broke, the storm clouds could create a really dramatic sky. Optimism ruled. We passed by people on the trail who saw our gear and smiling politely said, "I don't think you'll be taking many photos up there. It's all fog." Undaunted, we trudged on. At the overlook, where on a clear day you can see 165 miles and as far as Mount Monadnock, the view in all directions was white. We could barely see the trees a few feet away. With 45 minutes til sunset, we refused to be defeated and continued the climb all the way to the summit and Heublein Tower. The path ws muddy and the pea soup was thick. As we made our last ascent up a little ridge to the tower, we were thrilled and couldn't believe our eyes. Miraculously, blue patches were appearing in the sky! It was unbelievable. The sun was burning it's way through the fog. In moments most of the sky was blue. We scrambled to set up our tripods and started photographing. Yippee! We were going to see an amazing post-storm sunset after all! cont.

Thank you, Carol. With only no more than a 10-minute window between walls of fog, I was glad to get at least this momento of this exhilarating experience.

Talk about right place at the right time. A beautiful moment on the last day of 2011.
