This hike combines woodland forest, beautiful streams, fantastic Pitch Pine landscapes, a waterfall, and fantastic views of the Hudson Valley.
The first portion of our trip is on the Mossy Glen Trail which follows the Peters Kill stream as it carves a beautiful path through the bedrock. We then turn onto Blueberry Run, aptly named for the expansive berry bushes that fill both sides of the trail. As we climb upwards we begin to see more rock outcroppings and Pitch Pines. Finally, we arrive at Castle Point, the highest overlook in the park. From here we can see the Gertrude’s Nose cliffs and amazing views of the Hudson Valley. We will stop here for lunch and enjoy the view.
Our return route follows a section of the Long Path to Rainbow Falls. We then continue on through beautiful landscapes until we arrive at the Lower Awosting Carriageway. We then have an easy 2 mile walk back to the parking area.
For those not familiar with the Shawangunk Ridge geology and flora, this trip will give you a thorough sampling and a chance to discuss what makes the Shawangunk Ridge one of the most unique environments in the United States.
