Subject: [atheists-453] Special Event - Thursday, October 14th

Hello everyone,

Several MMAH members are planning to carpool to Grand Rapids on Thursday, October 14th to attend the Center For Inquiry (CFI) Meeting in which Barbara Oakley, PhD., P.E., will be the featured speaker.  She will be presenting on her latest book, Cold-Blooded Kindness (See description of the book in the announcement attached below).

A couple of years ago MMAH had a joint meeting with CFI MSU in which Barbara Oakley presented on her book, Evil Genes: Why Rome Fell, Hitler Rose, Enron Failed, and My Sister Stole My Mothers Boyfriend.   If you were unable to attend that outstanding presentation by Barbara, you would not want to miss this one by her on her latest book, Cold-Blooded Kindness.

In her presentation of Evil Genes, she discussed the results of latest scientific study into the genetic components involved with human behavior and takes readers on a provocative exploration of the darkest recesses of the human personality.  She examined human evil from a scientific perspective and recounted personal experiences that led her to research the topic, including episodes from her sister's life and from her travels.  She detailed recent advances in brain imaging and genetics that have implications for traditional views of evil, and discusses why a scientific understanding of evil is important.

Barbara said one of the most difficult problems in society today is understanding why some people intentionally inflict emotional and physical pain on others, and that such intentional pain occurs not only on a local level within families, with "friends," or in work situations, but also on a national and international scale.  She pointed to Hitler's Holocaust, Stalin's notorious purges, and Chairman Mao's knowing slaughter of tens of millions.  She sees that Neuroscience and genetics are providing the potential for a revolution in our understanding of why "bad" people do what they do. (Open http://www2.oakland.edu/users/oakley/ for more about Barbara and her amazing achievements.)

Barbaras presentation on her latest book, Cold-Blooded Kindness, holds the promise of providing another evening of unforgettable delight.  If you are interested in carpooling with us from Lansing to Grand Rapids, please let me know ASAP so we can make arrangements.  I can be reached anytime at[masked] or[masked] (cell).

"The world is so exquisite, with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better, it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look Death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides."
