BROkEN ON ALL SiDES:
Race, Mass Incarceration & New Visions for Criminal Justice in the U.S. Mass incarceration has emerged
as America’s new caste system. Discretion within the system allows for targeting people of color at disproportionately high rates and collateral consequences of criminal records allow for legalized discrimination in nearly every aspect of citizenship. This is a compelling documentary addressing racial inequities within our criminal justice system and its devastating collateral consequences. Jim Crow was crushed by a multi- racial movement. But almost every form of discrimination against African Americans that was defeated by the Civil Rights Movement is alive today and perfectly legal when applied to “criminals.”
This film centers on Michelle Alexander’s theories from her ground breaking book, “The New Jim Crow.” While this film is clear-eyed in its assessment of the many obstacles to change, it is a compelling call to action.
