Documenting The Human Experience
Part of the Midwest Street Photography Network, Connecting Street Photographers Throughout the Midwest!
The Original Chicago Street Photography Group! Collections of Urban Photography
NOTE: This group is looking for a Street Captain from the local Detroit area. Contact me for details.
For anyone interested in traditional street photography, historical/social documentary photography, or photojournalism - the art of capturing life as it happens, and telling stories with images. Paid workshops are also offered about once a month. We use every kind of camera, from cameraphones, DSLRs to traditional film. This group is open to anyone and is an opportunity to hang out with other photographers and sharpen your craft, or just to be creative with a group of friendly people.
We have many talented photographers in this network that are willing to share their knowledge. Following in the tradition of John Thomson and Jacob August Riis, the grandfathers of documentary street photography; Eugene Smith, the father of photographic spirit and redemption, and - Chicago's very own - Vivian Maier, mother of everyday common life. We're here to help each other become better photographers, and to have fun!

"Street photography is a type of photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and other settings. Street photography uses the techniques of straight photography in that it shows a pure vision of something, like holding up a mirror to society."
"HDR has no place in street photography." -Chris Weeks
"Fine art wins awards. High art moves the soul." -Chuck Jines
Do you still shoot film? Many in this group do as well, and from time to time we have film camera only outings where film lovers can share their love for film photography. We maintain a close relationship with Central Camera, Chicago's oldest camera store. Central has everything film photographers need, from cameras, to development chemicals.
I also offer development workshops several times throughout the year. On Photography: In my street photography workshops I explore the elements that give a photograph emotional, intellectual, and social impact. We can break this down further into the concepts, Studium and Punctum. I’m expanding my workbook to include detailed explanations of these important aspects of art. I’m currently reading a not-so-well known book by philosopher Roland Barthes titled, Camera Lucida. Barthes gives one of the most detailed explorations of these concepts that I have come across. Here’s a small abstract from chapter 11:
“Many photographs are, alas, inert under my gaze. But even among those which have some existence in my eyes, most provoke only a general and, so to speak, polite interest: they have no punctum in them: they please or displease me without pricking me: they are invested with no more than studium. The studium is that very wide field of unconcerned desire, of various interest, of inconsequential taste: I like / I don’t like. The studium is of the order of liking, not of loving; it mobilizes a half desire, a demi-volition; it is the same sort of vague, slippery, irresponsible interest one takes in the people, the entertainments, the books, the clothes one finds ‘all right.’”
