Keep the Governor's Council. By Peter Hill, Weston

I disagree with the assessment that the Governor’s Council should be eliminated, “Some argue Governor’s Council should be abolished,” Sept. 23. While in the past, the council has been a rubber stamp, that is no longer proving to be the case and the council of late has been doing the people’s work, to vet judicial appointments.

I believe it is the fact that this body is starting to do what it is supposed to do that has fueled the controversy. Some judicial nominees and senators and reps are upset that some of the hard questions, which are needed of potential justices, are starting to be asked.

Please understand that judicial nominees are basically lifetime appointments and one never knows when you may end up before a justice. You want to make sure that those who do get on the bench are fair and impartial. Like any elected body, whether it be the House, Senate and the Governor’s Council, not all we elect are perfect and the process allows voters to not vote in those we deem not qualified.

In the meantime, the Governor’s Council is the only place that public input is allowed into the process to vet and move a person onto the bench or not, and that public process should be protected.
