Lysak proposed the cut, then withdrew it. All bark and no bite?
By Peter Goonan, The Republican, June 26, 2013

SPRINGFIELD – While Mayor Domenic J. Sarno’s budget proposal passed Wednesday by a 10-2 vote, it was preceded by two hours of sometimes acrimonious debate including Ward 8 Councilor John Lysak referring to Sarno as “a thug mayor” during one heated conversation.

The two argued when Lysak proposed cutting $125,000 earmarked for a casino consultant in the coming year, and Sarno spoke of the importance of having funds available quickly if needed, for consultants. Sarno said that would also be true if there was an important road project in Indian Orchard that could be delayed.

Indian Orchard is in Lysak’s ward.

Lysak immediately took offense, saying Sarno’s comment was a threat.

“This is a thug mayor what we have here,” Lysak said.

Sarno denied any threat, saying he has tried to act professionally and politely in all his dealings.

“You want to take these pot shots at me, go right ahead,” Sarno said.

Bud L. Williams, who had the gavel in place of council President James J. Ferrera III, at that time, banged it on the desk and called for order.

He said the mayor and council are “elected adults” and said the exchange was “out of order.”

Afterwards, Sarno said that a debate on the issues can sometimes get heated.

“When things get spirited and emotions run high, things are said that I don’t think are meant whatsoever,” Sarno said. “I have thick skin. It was in the spirit of debate.”

Following the debate, Lysak withdraw the proposed cut.
