Tutorials: Intro to Shaders in Unity

Anupam wants to give a tutorial on how to leverage shaders in Unity. For the unfamiliar, shaders provide the extra texture details and effects we're so used to in todays top game titles. This should be an excellent tutorial for anyone looking to add that extra visual spark to their project!

    Hi All,
My team is developing an AR app for me in Unity.
    Have a question.
Appears the comment from a developer
"The asset bundles built for iOS can not be used for Android"
Please check this link and the question "Are AssetBundles cross-platform? "
    http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/Manual/abfaq.html.

We are creating the app using asset bundle (for cloud asset downloads). Can the same asset bundle be used for iOS and Android?

    Best regards
    Suresh

According to the table in the documentation, it appears that asset bundles can sometimes be specific to the platform they are developed for. An asset bundle developed for use on the iOS platform would not work on Android, no. Another version of the same bundle would need to be created for Android. Hopefully that isn't too hard!

Hey folks, my Graphics blog is at dasvfx.blogspot.com. Please keep an eye on it for a fairly heavily commented source. Should be up in the next 24 hrs.

    - Thanks.

Thanks everyone for coming. I know the examples were really basic but hopefully the mystery of shaders is now and forever lifted. I'd love to continue on this track, build on previous knowledge and get into more advanced techniques. Let me know how you liked this one and I'll definitely invest more time in the next one!

Really enjoyed it! It was a perfect intro for me to something that was otherwise a bit of a black box. I would definitely love to keep going from where we left off and get into more advanced techniques as we go.

Excellent! Anupam gave a great introduction to blending using shaders. Incredibly useful!

Unfortunately I can't be there either, I had some important things come up last minute. I too *really* wanted to attend this one. I was going to bring my video camera, but that is out now. *Anupam, can you try out some screen recording apps with microphone as well? Or if someone else can grab a video camera? I really want to find out more about this. Particularly, I want to figure out how to get past the Magic of it. I.e. what is the basic syntax, what are these method names that you can use, and how to do you do a few odd things, like mask images together?

    Thanks.

So, I forgot I'm going up north for this. Obviously summer is a damn busy time for a lot of us. I really wanted to be there for this one too. Any chance someone could record this session and post it somewhere? :)

I presume Unity+Mono Develop. Is there anything else that would be useful as a tool or guide to have with us when we come to the class? The key confusion I've had with starting, is that it seems like there are a lot of magic methods in Shaders that are based on hardware capabilities. I'd love to know if there is a good list of commands, and especially if there is an Intellisense style editor for Shaders. (Windows preferred, Linux is possible, mac is not so open to me)

Is this class on applying the shaders already available, or do we learn how to program shaders?

This would be learning how to program shaders.
