Right now, I'm developing this workshop ... also I'm drafting a fantasy novel set in Ancient northern Africa (Libya and Egypt). That's been my NaNoWriMo for a couple of years now. As of today (May 14, 2012), my semester at Mount Mary College (where I teach) is nearly over, so I can get back to more intense work on my own writing.
As well as socializing at other Meetups, I want to lead a congenial group of dedicated writers and friendly critiquers. Start--at least start that novel you have been imagining! Get words down and share them. And even if a group member hasn't written anything, he or she still has a lot to contribute as a listener/reader. The general order of business at our meetings will be to read some pages by authors who have new text to share, have each listener respond (and the writer needs to NOT EXPLAIN) and then, if there is time, we could discuss a more general writing issue, such as involving first pages or communicating background. I'm also planning to ask some local writers I know to come speak to us about specific topics such as plotting and finishing. Professional writers charge for speaking, however, so there may be an additional fee for those special meetings.
I'm moderator of Milwaukee Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Workshop, organized by Cate on Meetup! I love F/SF with great worldbuilding and characters. My MA is in Creative Writing, and I've taught writing in some form since 1982.
