How You Can Get the Most out of WordPress and the WordPress Community

*note - we are one week later this month and are meeting on Thursday, due to the organizers attending WordCamp Chicago*

Many of us are looking for help with our WordPress sites or want to learn more about building sites for ourselves and for others.  Coming across the right information and getting the most out of WordPress can be daunting with all the information out there.  Luckily, groups like this exist to help you.

Meetup members and WordPress community contributors Brad Parbs (@bradparbs), Marc Benzakein (@markbenzak), and Dustin Filippini (@dustyf) will hold a panel discussion on what you can do and where you can go to make the most out of your WordPress experience.

They will lead and open discussion with all attendees and topics will be based upon the audience's needs, but we will most likely be discussing the following:

• Ways to find help with WordPress

• Using the Support Forums

• Where to seek out the proper tools

• How to find people to work with

• How to become more involved in the community

• What types of events can I attend?

• What is the WordPress community?

• What is a WordCamp?

• Why attending WordCamps and meetups are about more than just the sessions.

We would also again love to thank our sponsor C2 Graphics Productivity Solutions.  They will once again be providing us with meeting space and food and beverage for the event.

Sounds like it was a great meeting. Drove downtown not thinking about lack of parking due to summerfest. Maybe next time

I feel like I was able to take some of the discussion and apply it to when I'm working in WP. Some of the other meetups I've attended were more geared towards developers, which I'm not, so I appreciated this topic of where to look for resources and help!

Dustin, and Brad, Thank you for an outstanding session about tools, sites, and resources for WP assistance and support, and sharing your expertise and insider info and tips. I certainly did not know about most of them, and I have been doing a lot of looking and asking. I can see having a repeat that others mentioned they would like. Here is a key area that would be excellent to add and maybe there could be some contributions now. And it is: What are your favorite, most helpful articles that you have found or use for WP assistance and support. For example, here are two for developers, developing WP sites. That’s who was at the meeting except for me. Building Smartphone-Optimized Websites

We can definitely do it again. I also suggest going to WordCamp. We decided on this topic as it would lead into WordCamp and what will be happening there very well.

    I second Beth's request.

Anyone have any idea if all the street parking downtown is paid/metered?

As Dustin just emailed, you may want to allow extra time to park and get to C2. Most Summerfest Headliners begin between 6:30 - 8 pm. That means traffic tends to be worst from 5 - 7:30. If you want to get close to our building, the lot attached to our building is on Chicago Street, parking fee is $15.

Otherwise, parking north of Michigan Avenue or South of the Third Ward off 1st Street may be a bit easier. You'll just have to walk a couple blocks. See you tonight!

This would be a great Meetup, I'm sure, but I'd rather not deal with Summerfest parking.

Man, you just had to pick my night at Summerfest! Oh well, if the weather doesn't cooperate ...

Greetings! I have doing much WP research especially about themes. I have come across two excellent WP sources that maybe you don't know about: 2 Create a Website

Whoops, sorry, I am new and now see that the post about WP resources doesn't fit here. I had posted here because it had newer posts than the message board. I am also excited to share all the WP research, info gathering I have done that's in a big WP library or resource center.

Is WordCamp in June or July? You mention June here but the web site says July.

    June 9

    • Dustin F.

Good catch... Sorry about that. I mis-read the date on this meetup. WordCamp Milwaukee, is in fact, in July.

  • Dustin F.

Please note: I have changed the June Meetup to take place on Thursday, June 26. This is the day before WordCamp Milwaukee starts. We will do this, like last year, as a lead-in to WCMKE. A WordCamp ticket is not needed for the meetup. I'm going to tentatively keep the meetup at C2, but depending on the situation, we may move it to the Grand Avenue Mall where WordCamp is taking place. Stay tuned for more details.
