“Let's get together for affordable activities in our neighbourhood, the group is important because people and the connections they are able to make with each other are important. Mental health problems attract prejudices from society as a whole, and sometimes sadly from closer to home. Prejudice in society, family and the mental health system can be very damaging. The mental health system is often found to be intimidating and can make people feel as if they were somehow second class. Powerlessness within these systems often comes from people who use mental health systems feeling that they are in the minority and are in some way different to the norm. The Mind Medication group is one place, and one network where members say they can be themselves without feeling ashamed and can feel part of a supportive collective.
It seems more important than ever at times when services cannot provide stability and support that we are able to support each other.
What we all want, whatever one's mental state of health is a life that is worth living; a life that has meaning, which is not just existence. We want autonomy, to be able to take charge of our lives and to feel that our lives matter and have meaning. Drugs can alter the mind in a way that makes existence easier or more bearable, or easier or more bearable for others, or for the mental health system and society.
