East St. Paul (ESP) Speculative Fiction Writers Meetup

What a great bunch of bright, talented writers we have in ESP! Our topic of discussion for November will be The Agony of Cutting and Editing Down your Scenes. We've all been there--we have this beautifully-written paragraph that doesn't quite fit anywhere. What do you do?

Guidelines for submissions for critique:

•  Maximum of three items listed in Files under MORE! on the Homepage by November 5th.

• Submissions should be under 10,000 words and submitted in Word or RTF but not .docx because we can't all open .docx files.

• Please preface submissions with [ESP Crit 11-12] so we know it's for our group.

• Please add page numbers so those doing critiques on a separate sheet of paper have a reference point.

• Be sure to add a synopsis if posting a continuation of a previous submission. The word count would be included in the 10,000 limit.

Guidelines for critiques:

•  Find [ESP Crit 11-12] submissions listed in Files under MORE!

•  Print out a copy to make your edits and comment on. It's OK to change the format.

•  OR, make your comments on a separate sheet of paper to give to the author.

•  Verbal critiques are limited to three minutes.

See you in November.

Love all the personalities that come together for the love of words. Had a blast.

Do you know if there are any spaces left for contributions?

We only have time to do three critiques each month. You can submit something after our November Meetup.

Thanks Janice. I only found two so I must have missed one. I asked only because, 'if you don't ask, the answer is automatically, no.' Thanks for letting me know. :)

you can access their manuscripts by clicking on MORE! on the top pf the Home Page, click File in the drop-down box and the list of MS's will open up. Those prefaced by ESP 11-12 are those being critiqued on Tuesday. You have to be logged in on the Home Page to access Files.

This was unexpected, but I recently got a huge boost of writing fever, and wrote a short story earlier this week. I'm putting it out there for critique, but if it's too late for submitting, no worries.

I don't think its too late. I've downloaded it and am looking forward to reading it Jonathan!

Hi! I am really looking forward to meeting and discussing the craft of fiction writing with others who have a similar interest, and hopefully an infectious passion. I have recently started my first serious attempt at writing and find that the idea of an urban fantasy with an alternate history background opens up a lot of options for my story arc.

Greg, thanks for the encouragement. As my first attempt I know that it will be like a stone found on a path in the forest that I just know is beautiful, but it will take some care and polishing before it is anything that anyone else will acknowledge as worth a second glance. I hope meeting others with a similar bent will help me whelp my brainchild into a breathing, living being. :)

If it looks to be a larger, book sized work, you might be interested in NaNoWriMo, which starts in just over 2 hours. That's not meetup it's a cultural phenomenon.

Hey guys, I uploaded the next part of my story for November, but it's the only one on there that I can see! Normally we have quite a few people clamoring, but now we are coming up on the two week mark with two slots left to fill.
