Writing Historical and Public Domain Characters

How do you breathe life and detail into historical characters? If you're doing alternate history, time travel, or historical fantasy, chances are you will need to include not only famous historical figures, but also populate your fictional landscape with characters of your own creation. How do you make them both realistic and engaging?

Similarly, how do you play with characters from the public domain? Jasper Fforde's "Eyre Affair" was a lovely alternate universe piece that had Jane Eyre kidnapped away from her own novel. Jane Austen's Darcy has been, variously: a pirate, a vampire, a zombie killer, a detective, a time-traveler and has had literally hundreds of alternate Pride & Prejudice stories told about him.

Both require research, creativity and daring. Do you have these in you? Come join us and find out.

Q - would love to hear about how to address real crime...esp criminal and civil defendants in real cases esp those who are guilty but get off....how to deal with details can get very dicey, eh?

      You can't libel the dead.

You can libel the dead. They just have a hard time suing you for it.

I'm willing to work the camera but will require a few minutes instruction.

Thanks Andre! The camera is super easy to use. Let's talk in early March and schedule dropoff/pickup...

Good news: I just bought a lovely videocamera so we can have a more resolutiony youtube copy of our meetups!

Bad news: I can't make this meetup on Writing Historical and Public Domain Characters! So if someone wouldn't mind running the camera at this meetup, we can arrange dropoff/pickup and I can upload the video. Just comment back here if you're willing to help with this. Thanks!

My RSVP includes local author Katya Reimann, a woman who is awesome at historical research.
