East St Paul (ESP) Speculative Fiction Writers Group

For April, the topic for general discussion will be "Sexuality in Speculative Fiction".  Everyone is invited to bring an example from a story or book showing creativity and style.

We will accept three submissions for critiques--first come, first served. The guidelines are:

• Items must be listed in Files under MORE! on the Homepage by April 1st. You need to be logged in on the Homepage to access Files.

• Submissions should be a maximum of 10,000 words and submitted in Word or RTF, but not .docx or PDF. If doing a continuation of an ongoing work, please do a synopsis, the word count to be included in the maximum.

• Please preface the submission with [ESP Crit 4-8] so we know it's for our group.

• Please add page numbers so those doing critiques on a separate sheet of paper have a reference point.

Guidelines for critiques:

• Locate submissions under [ESP Crit 4-8] in Files under MORE!

• Print out a copy and make your edits and comments on it. It's OK to change the format for your printout.

• OR, make your comments on a separate sheet of paper to give to the author.

See you in April!

I thought the discussion went very well. Well moderated, a lot to say about putting sexuality into the craft of writing. Would have liked to see a deeper discussion, nevertheless it went smoothly. Also, the critiques were also very well moderated and thorough.

Once again great meeting. Thank you everyone for your critiques. I appreciate the time and effort you put into editing my writing.

I really like the 3 minute limit on reviews. It stops people from droning on and on about stuff others have said previously. I also like that copy editing is off-limits for comments. Critiques are done on drafts, and copy editing (punctuation, spelling, grammar, usage) is a polishing step done right before publishing. Drafts are not the time for those kinds of comments. I also really like that we have a writer's craft topic during each meeting. That, in addition to draft critiques, are what help us to grow as writers. Janice, you do a fabulous job of running this group!

Hasta la vista, amiga/os. I'll be in Costa Rica during this month's meeting, so I want a full accounting of sexuality in spec fiction. What a topic to miss, eh?

Sorry, I'll be traveling on business that week. I'll try to review any stories that are posted and send comments via email.

I set a limit of 20 for the Meetups. It becomes too crowded with more than that. Comments welcomed.

I like the idea. I don't like saying no to people who want to join and add to the group, but there is just so much space and time.
