Events FAQ

How do your Events differ?

Hear people read from works in progress, share in questions about the business of the Meetup, meet people and kibbitz. This is a great event for newcomers to get a taste of our group. For questions on Meetups or suggestions for places to meet, please contact our group dis-Organizer, Hilary.

Submit manuscripts to be critiqued via our files section. Write critiques to share at the workshop, face-to-face. Hug Grr the comfort animal. For more answers on this, see our workshop guide or contact our workshop coordinator, Jaye.

These are events where we lure in famous pros with the offer of lunch and dinner and then mercilessly ask them lots of questions about their work. It's lots of fun. Some of the authors we've hosted include Patricia C. Wrede, Pamela Dean, Naomi Kritzer and Lyda Morehouse (aka Tate Halloway.)

Hear an author (mostly local) read for an hour and a half. Go out for an informal gathering for beer and pizza afterwards. If you are interested in being a reader for the Speculations Reading Series, you should contact Eric M. Heideman. It's also a good idea to attend these readings so that you can lobby him in person.

These follow the Speculations readings, and always draw a large crowd of local SF writers. At these we enjoy good beer, good pizza and great discussions. If you want a chance to have good, no-holds barred conversation with other members, this is the event for you. This is also a great introductory event for newcomers... The conversation never lags!

Retrofits is NOT an official workshop of Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers, but we do post notices of our meetings here so that prospective members can find us.

The Retrofits writer's group has been in existence for about four years. Retrofits used to be associated with MISFITS, but is currently independent. Prospective members are welcome to sit in for a meeting or two. We are primarily oriented towards speculative fiction, but have also covered other types of writing for members.

Questions about Retrofits can be directed to Ricky Foos, who is MinnSpec's official liaison with the Retrofits writing group.

Just what it sounds like. We go out for an SF movie, and then make fun of the dialogue afterwards at dinner. Have suggestions for a movie? You can suggest them in our Upcoming Movies discussion on our message board, or contact our two movie Czars, Jason and Bret.

We strut our stuff at the major local conventions by participating in group readings and other programming items. If you have questions or suggestions on this, please contact our Convention Coordinator, Michael.
