Location: Superior Hiking Trail

Length: Saturday 8.6 miles, Sunday 6.5 miles

Rating: Intermediate (3.5)
Please note - this trip includes a 300 foot elevation climb in the last 2.3 miles of Saturday's hike - physical endurance and strength (and a "can-do" attitude) is essential!

Trailhead: Gooseberry Falls State Park Visitor Center

Directions: Take 61 north out of Duluth. At milepost 38.9, turn right into State Park. Check in at the contact station for the campground to be directed to the parking area.

We will be hiking the section of the Superior Hiking Trail from Gooseberry Falls State Park to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. We will need to position cars overnight at both State Parks, so State Park vehicle passes are required.

Saturday:
This section of the SHT is professed to offer some of the most stunning views of Lake Superior. In addition to many views of the lake, we will hike through groves of aspen, birch, cedar and poplar and enjoy a scenic waterfall from a branch of the Split Rock River. We'll pass by some rather impressive rock formations, including a chimney formation called the Pillars. Saturday will end with a challenging, yet rewarding, section of trail. The elevation changes become more severe, climbing about 300 feet over the last 2.3 miles, but we'll enjoy sights and sounds of the Split Rock River cascading through beautiful, red rock canyon walls along with multiple waterfalls. We'll crash at the Northeast Split Rock River Campsite for the night.

Sunday
After our climb on Saturday, we'll get to travel along the ridgeline for a short way before descending. This section of trail will include overlooks of Lake Superior and the Split Rock Lighthouse. Gorgeous!

If you're interested in coming on this trip, you MUST have been at the June Meetup for planning on Monday June 18th. Do some research, if possible, get some emails going between the participants who are signed up, and be prepared to discuss routes, carpools, campsites, mileage, and group gear.

See you on the trails!

    •  I wish every hiking trip would be like that. Some bar hopping, nice campgrounds, beautiful scenery, great company and a good lunch in a nice lace to finish.
    •  It was great! There were fun, peaceful, tired, comical and team-work times all rolled up in one trip!
    • Meg
A very supportive, kind group of hikers. Alot of fun too! Really fabulous.
    •  This part of the trail is beautiful - with water flowing on red rocks and trail paths overlooking Superior. You people are becoming backpacking pros!!! If you find it hard to appreciate how great a group you are in (but how is that possible at all!), twist your ankle! ^_^
