Apostle Islands July 1-5, 2009

***A "yes" RSVP for this trip requires immediate payment via PayPal. Please do not sign up without paying.*** I visited the Apostle Islands for the first time over the Fourth of July weekend in 2008. WOW, is all I can say. You will take a boat cruise for one hour from Bayfield, WI to the Presque Isle Campground on Stockton Island in the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. It has its own visitors center. You select a campsite from among 18 or so on the shallow Presque Isle Bay. This allows an experience more like car camping, but you do need to haul your gear up to one-half mile to whatever campsite you end up at. To see what a great location this is, I highly encourage checking my photos from last year:
http://outdoors.websh... Also check out the Apostle Island National Park/Lakeshore site: And a page specific to Stockton Island on the above site: Along with one showing its campsites (but you can't choose a campsite till you arrive and see what's open and available). They are all basically the same: The island features around 14 or so miles of hiking trails. You'll want DEET as some go through thick woods and wilderness. Also, you'll want shoes or sandals that can get wet. (Hey, it's an island!) Be as active as you desire. There is a white sand beach on Julian Bay around half a mile east of the campsites. Or go up to around 12 miles roundtrip on a day hike to Trout Point (we could also check into permits to backpack and stay there overnight)... or lesser mileage on other hikes. The island has water available at the visitors center, vault toilets and no showers. It has steel bear lockers at each campsite in which you can keep your food. Stockton has around 38 black bears (I never saw one). There are nightly ranger campfire talks. Sunsets are to die for! Also, you can bring along a kayak or canoe for around a $20 fee on the boat - and then putz around in the bay and in Lake Superior. I'm planning Wed., Thursday and Friday nights on the island. That means getting to Bayfield early Wednesday or arriving and camping there on the mainland on Tuesday night at our reserved site. The shuttle boat will leave at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, and you need to be there an hour ahead of time. Saturday when we get back we'll look at hiking the Meyer Beach trail, around half an hour west of Bayfield, still on the coast. We'll at least go in to see the sea caves all aglow at sunset... We have a mainland campsite reserved. (we are coming off on Saturday, July 4 to allow for one day of potential bad weather that might keep us on the island till Sunday... hopefully no more than that! The boat can't run in bad weather.) EDITED TO ADD****The trip price is $110 total, plus any fee for a kayak. Includes mainland campsite near Bayfield on Tuesday, June 30 - if you want to drive up then (we plan to leave the dock Wednesday, July 1 at 11 a.m. and you need to be there an hour beforehand) - and on Saturday night, July 4, as well as shuttle boat and island camping on July 1-3. We come off the island July 4. If there's bad weather, hopefully we would come off Sunday, July 5 and drive right home. We are reserving four campsites on Stockton for July 1-3 with up to three tents per campsite. We will try to get all the information out on this trip through e-mails. We have good planners going on this trip: assistant organizers including myself, Rachel, Bill and Dave, and group organizer Julianne. One carpool will likely go from Rochester for us "southerners" ;-P

Not a dog-friendly trip, sorry! But it is a Ken-friendly trip. Glad you're coming, Ken!
