SHT from Silver Bay to Finland

Day 1 – approximate timeline

• 1:00pm:  Meet in Mpls for those carpooling

• 1:30pm:  Leave Mpls, carpool ~4hrs to Silver Bay / SHT trailhead

(includes ~30min leeway for restroom breaks, fuel stops, etc.)

• 5:00-5:30pm:  Meet at SHT Trailhead.  Ferry cars to Finland.

• 6:00-6:30pm:  Arrive back at SHT Trailhead.  2 mile hike to Penn Creek Campsite.

• 7:30pm-ish:  Reach camp, make dinner, setup tents

• 9:00pm:  Sunset, campfire, roast marshmallows

Day 2 – Hike to West & East Kennedy Creek Campsites

• Sunrise 5am, Sunset 9pm

• ~13 miles including spur trails to view points

• This is one of the most challenging sections of the SHT with lots of up and down, but the payoffs are many great views.  The trail passes the cliffs overlooking Bean & Bear Lakes, Round Mtn, Mt. Trudee, Raven Rock, High Falls of the Baptism River (the second highest waterfall in MN), and Fantasia Overlook.  This section of the trail includes “The Drainpipe,” a 150 foot rock crevice with rock steps.

• We will camp at West and/or East Kennedy Creek Campsites near the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center.

Day 3 – Hike to Finland Recreation Center

• Sunrise 5am, Sunset 9pm

• ~12 miles

• This section varies from easy, long stretches to steep ascents and descents.  There are many open ledges affording views of Lake Superior and inland.  This section includes some of the most impressive terrain on the SHT, including a boardwalk constructed over a beaver dam, a glacial erratic (boulder) that is over 20 feet tall and high cliffs overlooking the Sawmill Creek and Baptism River valleys that are known as the Section 13 crag to local rock climbers.

• At Finland Recreation Center we will retrieve our cars, drive back to the trailhead in Silver Bay to pick up the remaining cars and drive back to Forest Lake – stopping for dinner along the way.

I don't get off work until 3pm, is there any way I can meet up with the group and if so where? Also, if someone else needs to go up later they could ride with me.

CJ- would you mind carpooling then? I'm able to drive, if needed.

The only cost is a share of fuel costs for carpooling.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
