Yes, they did warn me. However, mailing lists work better for keeping in touch than forums do. A mailing list is pushed out to you - you don't have to remember to log in to look at messages. If you really would prefer a forum-like environment, you can turn off the emails and just visit the list archive on your own schedule.
I've always despised forums and I'm glad that Meetup changed their format.
I opted to keep the forum intact rather than deleteing it, so everything that was posted there remains.
