Beginning Sailing Lessons, Classroom Session, 1 of 6

Our instructor, Robb Harriss, grew up sailing on the East Coast and has extensive experience in small boat and long distance sailing. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Wayzata Community Sailing Center for more than a decade and works on the Race Committee for local US Sailing Racing Events. Robb plans to bring a causal and social atmosphere to these lessons meant for beginning sailors.

These lessons are meant to teach competence and confidence to the beginning sailor but will not lead to any type of official certification, unless you want me to create something in Photoshop.

The presentation will last about 45 minutes with socializing before and afterwards. Those attending should monitor their email for any changes that may be announced as we launch this new project.

On the Water Sessions will follow the Classroom Sessions and will require current Dues and Waiver. Additional costs may or may not be required for the On the Water Sessions.

Thanks to those of you who came to this meetup. For those of you that didn't show up, you missed out on some great information on sailing basics. Robb put a lot of thought and time into this first lesson, and I'm sure the subsequent ones will be just as good. Thank you Robb!

I would also like to sign a waiver and pay the dues. Will that be possible? Also, I have a conflict on 6/19 and will most likely be unable to attend that evening. Thanks!

  • Janet

I work until 7:15 and will try to get there by 7:30. Jim, can your bring waivers so I can sign one? Thanks!

I love the idea of these classes as I'm a total beginner, but I have another commitment this night. Can I still attend to following events?

    June 4, 2013

    • Robb

Certainly, they're non-contiguous but blend together naturally

six different lessons. None is long, unless you guys want it to go longer.
    Topics to include:
What's That (parts of the boat, and other odd jargon)
The Well Traveled Sail Bag (what to tote and why)
Which Way Do I Go? (Wind on the water and sailing in it)
Get out of My Way (Rules of the Road)
and we'll toss in a knot of the week.
Since this is a user driven presentation there will be time for questions and answers and shaping the sessions to user needs and desires. Note that these are for beginners. All are welcome but there will be no discussion of windward rounding tactics and using RRS rule 18 to your advantage by taking the inside when outside the zone. (If you know what that meant you can probably help teach).

I want to confirm whether these are 6 different lessons or 6 opportunities for 1 lesion? I've sailed before, but self taught, I would like to learn details - terminology - "the right way".

    June 4, 2013

    • Jim H.

Yes Byron, these would be six different lessons. As Robb Mentions below "Please bring your (written) questions. We'd like to design and plan the sessions to meet both your interests and needs."

I used to do a lot of sailing years ago. Looking to get back into it and find people who would like to sail with me on Coon Lake.

Please bring your (written) questions. We'd like to design and plan the sessions to meet both your interests and needs. Consider this a user-driven program rather than a predetermined formal course structure.
