Volunteer Event - Cook for and Dine with Families at Local Homeless Shelter

The Minnesota Atheists will have another powerful and unique volunteer opportunity at the Family Place homeless shelter in downtown St. Paul. Although it is right next to the First Baptist Church, and that church provides help to the shelter, the Family Place is a completely secular 501 (c)(3).

We will be preparing dinner for as many as 40 people (we'll know the exact number the day before we will serve) at the Family Place. We will then dine with the families and then clean up afterward. We will have full access to their kitchen to make the preparations. The food we serve is up to us.This month Rachel will serve as our kitchen leader and come up with our meal plan.*Look in the comments section for ingredient suggestions to bring with you!*

We should plan on arriving shortly after 3 PM for orientation, set up, and meal preparation. The orientation lasts approximately 30 min. which would give us at least 45 minutes to prepare the meal since dinner is served at 4:30 PM.

For parking:

The Family Place rents parking space from First Baptist Church so you can park for free in their lot (do not Park on the street since it is a ticket and tow area); the entrance to the parking lot is a few feet East of the corner of 9th and Wacouta. Drive to the far end of the lot, park, and walk across the street which will place you on the corner of 10th and Wacouta a few feet from of our entrance at[masked]th St. E. You will need to be buzzed into the building and the call button is located at the right side of the double doors which are not marked. Please use our 10th St. entrance and not the church entrance on Wacouta. Most GPS systems cannot find our location and they tend to get people using them VERY lost, but MapQuest seems to work okay.

The Minnesota Atheists is a partner organization of the Volunteers Beyond Belief

    15 lbs hamburger.

It looks like a volunteer is no longer a member of our group. Did anyone else catch this? Will we need somebody else to bring 15 lbs. of hamburger?

You guys, I am SO SO sorry, but I have the flu. I thought I'd get over it, but it's still around and I probably shouldn't be passing the flu to the homeless in this weather. I'm really sorry. :(:(

Don't worry about a thing. 'Cause every little thing's gonna be alright!

      February 16, 2013

    • Eric

Sorry you're sick Jeff. But I'm sure we'd all have you stay home and take care of yourself. Rachel: Do you need me to get the items Jeff was going to bring?

Very late to the game, but if there are any openings and/or needs to bring food, we can. I don't expect an opening, but if there is...

Hi Matt. If a spot doesn't open up for this event (and it looks like it won't) we will be doing it again on 3/30. Private message me if you would like me to RSVP for you when I post it on Meet Up.

I'm no longer working this Saturday , I would love to come and help if there's a spot open and i can bring over whatever else that's needed.

I'm sorry to be getting into this after most others have agreed to contribute ingredients. What's needed now? I can bring 5 lbs. of hamburger if any is still needed. Anything else?

    January 31, 2013

    • Rachel B.

Great to have you, Lynne. It would be great if you could bring 5 lbs of hamburger. Everything else is accounted for, unless you'd like to bring more hamburger. But 5 lbs would be great. See you in a couple weeks.

It looks like a "former member" is going to most likely *not* bring the 15 lbs of hamburger. If there are any takers, please feel free. Otherwise, Evan and I can bring it.

I am impressed how everything has come together. Being kitchen leader is pretty neat.

We still need: 15 packets of hamburger seasoning
    1 gallon re-fried beans
    garlic salt
    2 tubs spring salad mix
    1 large bag baby carrots
    1 dozen hard boiled eggs
    3 gallons milk
    2 containers Kool-Aid

    Any takers?

    January 28, 2013

    • Jeff G.

Okay, I'll bring the rest. So that's garlic salt, 2 tubs of spring salad mix, 3 gallons o' milk, and 2 containers of Kool-Aid. Now... what's a "container" of Kool-Aid? The big size of powdered drink mix?

      January 29, 2013

    • Rachel B.

Yup. It's kind of a funny shape. Net weight is 19 oz. And it says on it, "Makes 8 quarts".
