Why Skeptech? What is so important about technology that it became the theme of this event? After exploring other important topics like science, community, activism, politics, sexuality, and human rights – we settled on technology because we thought it was relatively unique, absolutely essential to the atheist movement, something most people want to learn more about, and something that just about everyone can relate to.

In a recent interview at CNN, Jessie Galef, the Communications Director for the Secular Student Alliance, and Hemant Mehta, author of the extremely popular Friendly Athiest blog, express what they believe is causing an increase in the rate of young people who are doubting their faith. Hint – it’s the internet.

At SkepTech we are first and foremost dedicated to education.  We want people to come away from this conference with practical skills that they can use in the the secular movement, and also in their daily lives.

In addition to skill development here are some of the more interesting tech-related objectives that would be fun to accomplish in and around this event -

  • Live streaming of the event
  • Creation of an atheist documentary
  • Development of a public database of articles and scholarly papers on the subject of religion
  • An online list of atheist-friendly technology consultants that can be accessed by anyone

If anyone has the know-how and desire to help accomplish any of these objectives – or if anyone has interesting new objectives they would like to mention we would love to hear from you.  Just send an e-mail to [masked].

Again, please be sure to Register!

I made a from for people to sign up for volunteering for book sales:
We will be selling two books: "Atheist Voices of Minnesota" and Greta Christina's book "Why Are You Atheists So Angry?".

The SkepTech Volunteer Coordinator has asked me to let people know that they still need some volunteers to help out this weekend. People can volunteer just a few hours of their time if they want. Mostly they need help setting up tables, staffing book selling tables, and this-n-that throughout the weekend. Contact me through Meet-up, or the Minnesota Skeptics group page on facebook if you would like the contact information.

As one who began his career in 1956 (before most of you were born) I commend you on celebrating technology.

Just keep looking forward. For that is where technology leads us all.
