  • This location is shown only to members

Agenda:

1. Identify the data set to work on. If you have concrete suggestions on this bring it to the meeting. If you have identified one, please bring the URL for the data set, information on the data format, etc.

1.1. Identify the problem to solve, on the data. Or the questions to be answered on it.

2. If you have something to show on R, Hadoop or Data analysis algorithms, feel free to bring your laptop to the meeting. We do not have an LCD projector as of now. We hope to get one by the next meet.

3. Setting up Linux cluster and installing Hadoop on it. Let us talk about the merits of this versus ordering a virtual cluster on Amazon Cloud.

4. Any other topics that come up.

    Hello everyone!

Just joined this group as I'm learning about data analytics in my Post Graduate studies at George Brown College.

This looks like an excellent way to learn from real industry experts, so I'm looking forward to what everyone has to say!

With Amazon's EMR, all of the issues associated with setting up hadoop appears to be taken care of. http://aws.amazon.com/elasticmapreduce/getting-started/

This is a continuation of the post below:

    (2) Last night, I was grappling with some linux admin issues while setting up IBM BigInsights (hadoop platform) on my 2-node cluster. The install package comes packaged with a pre-install check script and identifies issues that need to be resolved. The issues I encountered are more about linux admin than about Hadoop at this moment. I will document the issues I encounter along with resolutions whenever I find them. If anyone in this group has expertise in setting up Linux clusters, I will expedite my plan to write on what the issues are. In any case, this can be a topic to talk about in the next meetup.

If you have any ideas for the meetup, please voice it out.

    Hi All,
I am wondering if any of you have ideas on what could be the topics for the next meetup on March 23rd. I am currently working on a couple of things in parallel:

    (1) Statistical Analysis using R: Saad introduced me to an e-book that introduces statistical analysis using R. I went through the first 2 chapters leading to the exercises involving concepts discussed in the chapters, and lab exercises using R. It may be too early to talk about that in the March 23rd meetup, but if there are no better ideas, I can talk about my learning here. I am sure Saad can back me up here as he is an expert in this area. Since there is a 1000 character limit on each post, I will state my second suggestion in the next one.
