Star Spangled Paddle

Celebrate Independence Day island style and join us for the best seats in town at the Biloxi 4th of July Fireworks Display. We will land at the very edge of the firework barge boundaries on Deer Island which affords us truly spectacular views of the explosions overhead. This meetup also has an option for camping overnight on Deer Island for those interested in doing so. The fireworks display is set for 9 pm. However, due to the congestion of cars and people on HWY 90 and the Kuhn St. launch, we will meet and launch early, tentatively at 5:30 pm. For those not staying overnight, please allow yourself extra time to get home after the display is finished. The Biloxi-Deer channel will be full of inebriated boaters. It is wise to let them clear out before heading back to the main land.

**Update**

This meetup is planned from the experience had last year at the same location.  We cannot account for any change that the city may make to accommodate the celebration until the day of.  Please be adaptable if need arises.

That being said, the plan is still to meet at 530 PM at Kuhn Street Launch.  We will drop off our boats/gear and park where we can.  If space is available at the launch, great.  If not, parking will most likely be across HWY 90, next the Ohr-Okeefe Museum.  Parking is at your own risk.  Security is not guaranteed.

We plan to leave the beach at 630 PM and make our way to Deer Island.  We will try to find a camping spot (for those camping)  at or near the boundaries of the firework displays.  Due to the size of our group, we will most likely have to spread out over a large area.

If you are not camping, bring a bow light and or headlight when heading back to the mainland.

There is a chance of T-Storms Friday.  Be prepared for mother nature if she comes by for a visit.

My first paddle with this group and i'm impressed with the number of people but also with the group organizers. So much to see here. Have lived here for 25 years with a Sailboat, Waverunner, kayak, and GradyWhite and still haven't seen it all yet!

What an awesome time. For just the cost of a kayak and a taste for adventure we had the best seat in the house. The awesome company was a great bonus. Definitely gonna be there next year.

On Saturday morning, the landscape around our tents appeared to be littered with broken coconut shells. These turned out to be cardboard fragments of the individual mortar shells, almost all of which did no harm. My tent took a direct hit from something hot, but the damage amounted to a single neat hole, no more than you would get from stubbing out a cigarette on the tent fly. Easy to patch, and a cheap lesson.

It was very nice, we had a great time. I agree we were close as we could be to the fire works. It was like a special invitations with the best seats. Thanks Nick {Even if my hubby saw a child crying and went to save her from sinking into the mud only for it to swallow him up!! LOL } Great Times , great Memories

  • Barry M.

Boy, what a great way to watch a spectacular fireworks show. We got as close to the fireworks as humanly possible. I hope that none of the tents had any burn holes. Waiting an hr after the show for the insanity on shore to die down before heading in is definitely the way to go. I can't wait to do it again next year. Everything was almost perfect this year. Great to see everyone again and I made some new friends.

That was you who told us 2 not to pull up to the mud? Lol thanks for the tip!

Be advised that there are not usually any restroom facilities at this boat launch, unless Biloxi dropped off a portalet for the fireworks.

What is the address for the boat ramp? We can't find it.

    July 4

    • Barry M.

Kuhn St. Right across the street from the Ohr O'Keefe Museum and the Biloxi Yacht Club. A couple of blocks west of Harrahs.

      July 4

    • paul mckneely I.

I think it's Kuhn & beach blvd at least that's what I aw on the google

A question about the parking. If I spend the night on Deer Island, this will mean parking overnight at the Kuhn Street Launch or at the museum. Is this legal?

    July 3

    • Barry M.

Parking will be a mess. Don't expect to find a parking space at Kuhn St unless you get there VERY early. The safest place would be in Harrahs parking garage, but it's a couple of blocks away. I'm not sure what's overnight legal on the street.

We will be showing up a little early too to try and beat the traffic. My buddy and I will be in red/white pelican kayaks. We'll see ya out there.

Can anyone suggest secure overnight parking for a vehicle if the limited parking at the Kuhn St. boat launch is full at 5:30 p.m?

    July 2

    • Nick K.

Across HWY 90 next the Ohr-Okeefe Museum. However, it's at your own risk unless someone else in thread has a suggestion.

      July 2

    • Barry M.

Harrahs/Grand is only a couple of blocks away.

Anything special, other than a tent/bug spray, we should bring for this trip?

A good headlamp and a chair.

So camping would it best to use tent or hammock?

    June 19

    • Brent F.

Tent. The Skeeter's could be bad.

      June 19

    • Barry M.

Tent. There may not be anything much to hang your hammock from. Brent's correct, bugs can be an issue.

      June 19

  • Dirk van D.

Sounds like fun - I'll be there with my daughter, Marena in our Mohawk Blazer canoe, planning to camp.
