Book Discussion "The House Girl"

Book of the Month

February’s Book of the Month: The House Girl

Synopsis

The House Girl, the historical fiction debut by Tara Conklin, is an unforgettable story of love, history, and a search for justice, set in modern-day New York and 1852 Virginia.

Weaving together the story of an escaped slave in the pre–Civil War South and a determined junior lawyer, The House Girl follows Lina Sparrow as she looks for an appropriate lead plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking compensation for families of slaves. In her research, she learns about Lu Anne Bell, a renowned prewar artist whose famous works might have actually been painted by her slave, Josephine.

Featuring two remarkable, unforgettable heroines, Tara Conklin’s The House Girl is riveting and powerful, literary fiction at its very best.

This would have been my first meeting, but somehow I remembered about 5 minutes ago. That is not like me at all. My sister is in a show tonight and with all the talk and excitement I plum forgot. More excitement than I am use to in one day. Sorry for the last minute withdrawal. I will go to the bookstore to pick up the book.

I am sorry I can't attend. I ate something that disagreed with me and do not feel well enough to come this time.
I hope to be at the next meeting. I did thoroughly enjoy the book and was impressed with how Tara gave insights from each character's perspectives. And how she paralleled Lina's role at the firm with how Josephine played the game to survive at the plantation.
Until they both decided what they truly wanted, they would have to break away and stand up for themselves, no matter what it took.

I'm enchanted with Josephine and shared on the ReadAlong with Cornethia that the math of the lawsuit was very interesting and there was a very touching scene when the busy body neighbor complimented on the watercolor that Josephine painted and right in front of her the Missus claimed it as her own. The feeling that Josephine had of not being able to HAVE anything of her own was so sad.

I have started reading The House Girl and am really enjoying it. I am also looking forward to the movie Divergent which I think will help me decide if I want to read the sequels. I met some new ladies today who were not at the first session and discovered another writer - Jewel. I am a poet and have just published a small 36 page book of cultural poems titled The Color of Blackness. I hope to share it with Mocha Girls at subsequent gatherings. ($10)
