MOMS Club was founded in 1983 by Mary James, a stay-at-home mother of two from California. Weary of being home alone all day, James wanted to connect with other at-home moms in her area. She also desired playmates for her children. When she discovered that there were no existing organizations that met during the day and that designed activities for moms and children to enjoy together, she decided to start her own group. Based on the success of this initial chapter, MOMS Club spread throughout the country. Today, there are over 1500 chapters in the United States, as well as international chapters.
Our chapter, the Moms Club of East Northport, was started in May 2005 by Liz and Ana. As a non-profit corporation, we strive to offer support to moms in the Elwood and surrounding communities. These include East Northport, Huntington, Northport, Greenlawn, and Commack. Our chapter includes full-time working moms, part-time working moms, and stay-at-home moms, with the most active moms in the latter 2 groups, and with children mostly age 6 and under.
Our membership year runs from July 1 - June 30 and our annual dues stand at $20. This money is used to pay annual dues to International to help cover their costs of running the organization as a whole. On a more local level, the dues are used to cover Meetup.com fees, office and craft supplies, subsidizing some annual events, etc.
Currently, Moms Club of East Northport requires that members host just one event (at home or in a public place) during each 6 month period, with the understanding that the Club can only be as amazing as the involvement of the members. We strive to create a no-pressure, supportive and nurturing environment for our moms and their children. While our by-laws cap our membership at 50 moms, we would rather have a smaller, more intimate group than one that contains inactive members.
We meet at members' homes and selected public places. We perform charitable works regularly and are a non-profit organization. We are committed to supporting each other as well as enjoying motherhood together!
