MongoDB Engineer Derick Rethans will provide an insight into working with noSQL. This is a great opportunity to hear Derick talk in person (before the people who are paying to see this same talk later this year)!

“In this talk I will explain the differences between different types of noSQL databases as well as the CAP theorem. I will then progress to illustrate which paradigm shifts are necessary to successfully implement noSQL, using MongoDB as an example. The approaches to schema design, fault tolerance, the network breaking and latency are all things that are inherent to scalability with noSQL solutions and with this talk you will learn how to use MongoDB effectively considering all the above mentioned situations. Covered subjects will be: CAP theorem, schema design, dealing with error situations and architecture of multi-node set-ups.”

It promises to be a valuable couple of hours!

In the next production release of MongoDB the aggregation framework will return a cursor rather than an array. Perhaps Derick would be kind enough to say a few words on the consequences of this change.

This query arose from my attempts to run the code from this blog post by John Page, Senior Solutions Architect at MongoDB. (http://ilearnasigoalong.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/mongo-aggregating-fractals.html).

This will not work in version 2.4 as it requires a cursor. John tells me he used version 2.5 but even so I cannot get the output to render correctly in version 2.6-rc1.
I'd be interested to know if any other members of the group have any success with it.

Hi Stuart, Thanks for the suggestion. Derick is happy with that, and I've updated the description with that info.

Derick is doing a talk on "From SQL to NoSQL" at the International PHP Conference (http://phpconference.com/2014se/en/sessions/sql-nosql) that looks really interesting, if he'd be able to cover any of those topics.

Derick has asked if there are any topics that we'd like him to cover. Let us know if there are any topics you'd like to know more about!
    Thanks
