Missoula.rb Ruby Reboot

For Missoula Area Ruby Coders (and those aspiring to be such).

This will be an initial organizational gathering to meet each other and figure out where we want to go with this, and who might be interested in doing what.  For a little pre-meeting inspiration, I recommend http://confreaks.com/videos/2376-rmw2013-ruby-groups-act-locally-think-globally

Good wifi will be available for anyone wanting to bring a mobile device of one kind or another.

Look for the giant glass “ruby” on the table (unless you beat me there), or just a bunch of other people with laptops.  (If you want to get your own giant glass “ruby” to take to this or future meetups to make yourself easier to identify, you can get them at Michael’s for $5.99.)

If you’re brand new to Ruby and want to start learning now, I recommend the following resources...

http://tryruby.org/levels/1/challenges/0

http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/documentation/quickstart/2/

http://neurogami.com/content/10_minutes_to_your_first_Ruby_app/

http://pragprog.com/book/ltp2/learn-to-program

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CEKY2B2/

If you’ve done a little bit of Ruby before and are looking for resources with more depth, then...

http://www.codecademy.com/tracks/ruby

http://rubymonk.com/

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1934356085/

http://pragprog.com/book/ruby4/programming-ruby-1-9-2-0

Of course, Ruby developers of all levels should have a readily accessible bookmark to the API, and visit it frequently.

http://ruby-doc.org/

For more advanced Ruby Developers ( I know you have your own favorites), my personal recommendations are...

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0321584104/

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0321490452/

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0321721330/

http://www.amazon.com/dp/[masked]/ (Not Ruby Specific, in fact the code examples are in Java, but the principals are easily transported to any OO language, and the lessons are excellent. You do not need to know Java (I don’t), to get a ton out of this book.)

    Hi Jon,
What a great meetup. I've never programmed in Ruby, but I think it's something that I'm definitely going to invest some time into.
    Thanks,
    Ron

Thanks for setting this up, Jon! It was great to learn what Ruby is and where it fits into the big picture of web development.

Ok, I set a date and time for an initial organazational meet and greet. I hope the date/time are good for most of you. If, upon seeing "Elbow Room", you think of that old bar in the grungy trailer, then you clearly haven't been to the new place. Fear not.

I would be interested as well, any night but Thursday works for me.

I've noodled some existing Ruby but mainly I'm a Java guy looking to learn.

I don't live in missoula (I'm in Bozeman), but I would probably come over for a few meetings if you set it up :-)

I'd love to be a part of this. I've been using rails on a side project.

I've been gainfully employed coding Ruby full time for 7 years. Tried getting a Missoula Ruby Group going via Craigslist in 2007, but it petered out. Just got back from Railsconf and feeling inspired to try again.
