Thanks Scott, I'll be curious to get input from new users as well.
I'm looking forward to learning about Git and getting better at SVN! If anyone want's to carpool, I can pick you up at the Polson Safeway at around 4:20, and Ronan Harvest Foods at about 4:50. Thanks!
I am very bummed that I will have to miss this. I will be teaching class that night. Enjoy, it looks like a great topic.
Anyone interested in car pooling from Kalispell or Polson?
I was hoping to meet some of you tonight, but I have to go to Phoenix tomorrow for a conference and have too much stuff to do. Definitely next time though!
Our presentation is viewable here: http://bit.ly/mtsvngit![]()
We may make a few tweaks up to the last minute, though!
Excellent experience by both Jason and Andy. Even as a newbie to all of this I was able to follow along. Andy and Jason were very thorough and shared so that from new to pro, all were able to understand at each their own levels of comprehension. Thanks Guys, again!
Here's a quick & easy write-up about how to start using Git even if you are on a team that's still using Subversion: http://bit.ly/cLlu3Q![]()
Just wanted to let you know about Subversion tools I recommend. If you are setting up a Subversion Server I recommend Visual SVN Server (http://www.visualsvn.com/server/
) The basic license is free. This has integrated svn and Apache web server into one install, which is more secure than svn sever alone/"out of the box". It also has a simple but brilliant management console. More. . .
For SVN Clients:
I have and compatibility issues with TortoiseSVN, which lead me to try other svn clients. I recommend Syncro SVN Client (http://www.syncrosvnclient.com/
) which has a free trial and cost $70.00. I also recommend SmartSvn ( http://www.syntevo.com/
) also but not as much as Syncro SVN. I use the integrated SVN client in NetBeans 6.8 for simple tasks, but it does not contain all the features I like and has a bug using external diff tools.
I use two external diff tools. I give my highest recommendation to Beyond Compare 3 (http://www.scootersoftware.com/
). This just rocks and is worth the $30.00. I have used the previous version but 3.0 includes a tabbed interface, compare file, compare directory and the feature the is most killer compare a local directory to and FTP directory, which handles line ending and time stamp problems. My second diff tool is Compare It! 4 (http://www.grigsoft.com/wincmp3.htm
). It is quite good too.
James, thanks for these tips. I assume they're mostly for Windows users? Folks, don't forget there are more suggestions for clients and learning resources in our presentations slides here: http://bit.ly/mtsvngit![]()
Andy, You are welcome. Yes, these are Window programs. SmartSvn client is multi-platform
I wish there was a way to edit your post to fix the typos and syntax. Also the order I type the post in is backward from the way the site displays them so you get to read them in reverse order.

I'm very excited about this meeting...learning Git/Github, in particular. I haven't done anything yet, but here I am on GitHub if any of you are on there: http://github.com/scottrouse
