Whitefish Drink-Up

So we had a pretty fun turnout at our December Drink-up.  There was lots of good discussion about the Startup Weekends, functional programming, APIs for PDFs, functional programming, testing frameworks, the new local Geo group and even some python.  Plus the usual who's worked where when and what's in the works.

Most of us there seemed to agree to keep these Drink-ups going at the relaxed atmosphere of Grouse.  If anyone wants to spinoff some specific interest meetings, we can do that too in addition to our fun Drink-Up.

Now, we are scheduled for next month, with even some more subjects we haven't even touched on that much, like Kids in Coding, favorite IDEs, editors, productivity and development methods and more languages and frameworks.

Please stop by if you can make it. We'll meet in the bar like last time, although there seems to be ample room and access to expand or breakout if needed.  If you look around or ask I'm sure you will find us.  We are already getting the reputation with our hosts as being the ones working to solve the world's problems.

One last reminder that the geospatial/mapping group is meeting in Kalispell this Thursday night. http://www.meetup.com/montanaGeo/events/162314592/

Who out there in cyber land is going to Missoula's Startup Weekend?

Jill Seigmund at FVCC says there's a Startup Flathead happening September 19-21. Though I'm looking online and seeing this flathead.startupweekend.org So, there is one coming, just not sure exactly when.

Thank you for all the responses! I haven't heard of one being developed here in the Flathead Valley, yet. I would LOVE to have one here (Kalispell/WF) as Shawn mentioned. I'll see if I can reach out to Jill and find out more info on an upcoming one at FVCC and how to get involved.

Programmers in the area might possibly interested in the mini Maker Faire happening at FVCC on Feb22.

I'm not sure about tickets or prices, but I thought I'd let everyone know about it.

For those of you who attended the last meetup and were interested in learning more about anything location-based (mapping, analysis, available data, etc), you are welcome to attend our next meeting of the Flathead Valley Geospatial Meetup. Our next event will be a "social" (same as the last programmers meetup) on Feb 20 in Kalispell. http://www.meetup.com/montanaGeo/events/162314592/

It was great meeting some new techies and catching up with our regulars. Grouse Mountain really did a nice job setting us up with a comfortable meeting area.

Is there any interest in Hackerspaces in the valley? I would love to amortize the cost of a laser cutter or a 3d printer.

I'm not quite sure what you are talking about, but I'd like to hear more about it tonight. See you then.

Here is a link to my geospatial meetup through another group. You do not need to have any experience working with geographic data, just an interest in location-analytics or any kind of mapping-related tools, apps, websites. http://www.meetup.com/montanaGeo/events/155944192/

Thanks Ryan. I'm signed up and looking forward to it. It sounds like the collision of some area I'm very interested in.

Could we change the time to 7pm? 6pm is way to early for people who work until 5pm or later. 7pm gives people time to get home, have a bit of dinner, and then drive to the other side of Whitefish (especially in the winter) .

Well the plan is to chat about specific topics that hopefully wind up spinning off into smaller productive meets. Kermit chooses a few hot topics and we chat about those things. The drink ups are more of a low key social meet up to spin off those smaller more in depth meets.

Hi Marvin, I appreciate your concern about the timing and productivity of the event. The intent is is to lean more on the social right now, but with the goal of coalescing on other productive events in the future. If we can gather, get to know each other, discover commonalities, we can purpose for the productive.

I should have done a better job explaining. The timeframe for this event is broad with the intention of flexibility. Come late, leave early, or stay for the whole thing, whatever suits. Lets purpose to somehow meet on a regular basis and discover areas of interest for the future.
