Morris County Book Club February Meetup

Lost Memory of Skin
by Russell Banks
Fiction; 432pp.

Author of Cloudsplitter and The Sweet Hereafter. After doing time for a liaison with an underage girl, the Kid is forbidden to live within 2,500 feet of anywhere children might gather. With nowhere else to go, the Kid takes up residence under a south Florida causeway. Barely beyond childhood himself, the Kid is in many ways an innocent, trapped by impulses and foolish choices he struggles to comprehend. Enter the Professor, a man who has built his own life on secrets and lies, and who finds in the Kid the perfect subject for his research on homelessness and sex offenders. But when the Professor’s past resurfaces, the balance in the two men’s relationship shifts. Suddenly, the Kid must reconsider everything he has come to believe.

Lost Memory of Skin explores the zeitgeist of a troubled society where zero tolerance has erased any hope of subtlety and compassion—a society where isolating the offender has perhaps created a new kind of victim.

I wish we could get a round table because the restaurant was very noisy and it was hard to hear people at the other end of the table......

It was an unusually large group, so I apologize for the sound quality. The conference table tho' is a huge improvement over sticking together all the smaller 4-top tables that we used to do. ABC added the conference table about a year ago so I can't complain. Again, my apologies if you missed out on anything :(

I have already read this book (not planned, just happened that way )and have read one other of this author's books. You will, I feel, not be bored with this master story teller and the difficult theme he tackles in this book. The compassion and the pathos of the characters intersect at one the growing social problems of these modern American "lepers".
