Boat Dive: KVI & W. Seattle Reef

Meet Time:  8:30 am

Splash:  when you arrive

Skill Level:  All Divers

Boat: Aluminator Water Taxi

There are essentially two different dives here. The most popular is a series of cement columns and rocks that make up the primary reef directly in from of the orange tower. They are covered with plumose anemones and swarmed with rock fish, perch, sculpin, greenling, etc. The structure is beautiful and reaches from approximately 30ft to 110ft with some boulders scattered up as far as 15ft on a low tide.

About 50 yards away to the South is another finger of boulders that extends from about 60ft to 120ft. Here the fish tend to be larger and equally plentiful and make a great alternative if there are other divers at the columns. You can swim to it from the other reef but there isn't much to look at along the way.

The reef extends on a steep sloping bottom that gets deep rapidly. The shallows are covered in eel grass and sea lettuce and house all sorts of small creatures such as gunnels and sole and make a great spot for safety stops. Visibility tends to be good and current is usually mild.

Aluminator Water Taxi: is located in slip N-14 at Elliott Bay Marina ( Elliott Bay Marina is located on the south bluff of Magnolia, just west of Pier 91. From I-5 take the Mercer Street Exit. Proceed straight on Mercer which becomes Broad. Stay on Broad until Denny Way, take a right onto Denny. Denny will become Elliott Avenue. Stay on Elliott Avenue until you see signs for the Magnolia Bridge. Stay right and get on the bridge. Take the first (and only) exit off to the right of the bridge. The exit is marked. Take the second left and follow this road as it winds into the marina.
"N" dock is located at the east end of the marina. When you drive in to the parking lot, you will see signs that say "Permit Only", but you should drive right past them to the loading area (yellow curb) nearest the entrance to "L, M, & N" docks. Grab a dock cart and unload your car, then park in the row nearest the street which is clearly marked as "Guest Parking". You can phone Howie on Aluminator for the entrance code to the gate by calling[masked]. The code for the gate will also work for the marina rest rooms.

This was an excellent day for diving - no wind, flat calm seas, good people and good food :-) Lots of big fish and other interesting critters - huge octo at KVI. A great way to end the year!
