Contra Dancing with LIVE Music in Strawberry

In cooperation with the North Bay Country Dance Meetup, Mostly Marin brings you this opportunity to try one of the most up-lifting and lively forms of partner dancing.  If you CAN WALK you can Contra Dance!!  And it's a tremendous way to get the same exercise benefits you would enjoy hiking.  But to LIVE music!!

Men -- walk away from the couch and get out here!

Ladies -- Plenty of partners and a sure-fire "smiley-face" time!

Mostly Marin member Dawn Stranne will be your hostess this evening.  She will greet you and welcome you to the event.  BEGINNERS WELCOME!!  A free lesson is given at 7:00 and the dancing starts at 7:30.

High Point String Band (in town from Ohio for Faultline Frolic Contra Dance Extavaganza Weekend) featuring fiddle, banjo, percussion, piano and bass will heat up the space and caller Lisa Greenleaf will walk you through the zesty and flowing dances.

Got already to go to this and discovered the rsvp is closed. Oh well. Next time, maybe. Have fun.

It said rsvp ended at 5pm. Guess I am not very savvy on such things. Didn't notice the 25 number. If I could not figure the rsvp out, probably didn't have a chance on the dance floor.

I'm still figuring out Meetup's system...thanks for pointing this rsvp situation out. I'll ask around. Just know that you're welcome anytime, rsvp or no!

Sorry. I undid my rsvp on Sunday because I was feeling too exhausted to come out dancing.

I understand! I'm still learning the Meetup system, so didn't see the undo. Hope to see you next time Julia!

Dawn did a faboulous job hosting last night. We had a great time and we hope more Mostly Mariners will join us at our next dances in Marin or Sonoma County. Check them out on nbcds.org. We love beginners so come one half hour early for a free lesson. Elaine

    Hi Shawn,
For some reason my computer wouldn't push the
"Submit" button when I rated last evening, so I wanted to tell you that the evening was Fabuloso! The caller and the band were wonderful, spirited, professional. The experienced dancers were accepting, welcoming and helpful. I was new to this form of dancing, but I was often swept to the right moves by the flow of the dancing, the music and the guidance of the more experienced dancers. What I don't understand is how people could keep dancing for over 2 hours! I had to sit after an hour and then sneaked out. And I climb Mt. Tam every week! Is there any way, I could take some instruction at a slightly slower pace so I could absorb it a bit better?

    Thank you so much,

    Bob

I will be taking a moon light hike that evening.

Looks interesting. Hopefully I will be able to make it next sunday. Maybe, I will dance near the door, and if my dancing skills are abysmal, I can make an early and stealthy exit. Lol.

Having cheerleaders and food around--that sounds like good advice for life! Besides the music and dance, the best part about contra is the non-judgmental and helpful community. You'll be in good hands! See you at the break next to the music stage.

Thanks, it's always nice to be in good hands. Sounds like a commercial.

  • Robert O.

What a wonderful idea! Can I come even though I've never done any contra dancing?

    June 16, 2013

    • Dawn S

Absolutely! The beginners' lesson starts right at 7pm. Once the dance begins at 7:30, be sure to ask partners to dance that have a member nametag. Just tell them this is your first dance and they will be happy to help. I still consider myself a newbie and find it tons of fun.

I will be a hostess at the dance so I rsvped "no" to give a new person a chance to go.

This is going to be a great dance!

    A few tips for newcomers:

Tip 1: There's instruction at the beginning of each dance, lots of repetition and it's nice to know that even the folks who have been dancing for many years occasionally miss a few steps, laugh and get back into the dance! Tip 2: Wear shoes with a smooth sole that will let you turn easily. I've seen everything from tennis shoes and sandals to dance shoes and character shoes. Tip 3: It's casual attire. I like to wear a skirt with swingability! Tip 4: It's all about having fun.

    See you there!

    June 16, 2013

    • Heide N.

Thanks, I appreciate the tips. See you soon.

First-timers will find a wonderful and fun group of veteran dancers who will help you learn Contra through the lesson and each and every dance. Thanks to Contra dancers in Atlanta, here's a link to get you ready for Contra dancing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m9EGS4iiOg

This is a great opportunity for guys who haven't danced much to learn that yes, they can really dance and have a blast doing it! I'll be at the check-in desk from 6:45 until 7:30 to greet you and get you started. At the break, we'll meet up again at the stage where the musicians play. I look forward to seeing you there!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
