All levels of dancers will enjoy Contra dancing to one of the West Coast’s hottest touring folk dance bands—“Contra Sutra”! Rave reviews follow this all-star lineup of musicians who also perform with KGB, The Syncopaths, Lift Ticket and more. Contra dance music features fantastic fiddle tunes, driving Celtic rhythms, Cajun and sometimes dashes of Latin, Eastern-European and swing.
Contra dances are fun, easy to learn, and are always accompanied by live music. Before each dance, the caller teaches the dance and continues to prompt dancers after the band starts. Because the pattern of moves is repeated often, you learn quickly. Very little footwork is required—if you can walk you can do Contra dancing.
BEGINNERS are welcome—gather at 6:45pm to meet other new dancers at an orientation. Then at 7pm, take a free half-hour lesson to learn the basic moves before the dance officially begins at 7:30pm. Wear low, smooth-soled shoes, and loose, comfortable clothes. Come alone or with a partner—our dances are friendly and inclusive, and you’ll probably end up dancing (at least briefly) with most of the people in the hall. For more info: www.nbcds.org.
Admission: $12/$7 young adults under 26 and financial need.
“Contra Sutra” members are Dave Bartley (guitar, mandolin), Russell Shumsky (percussion), Marmi Rachmiel (flute) and Ryan McKasson (fiddle). Google them or check out their Facebook page to sample their music. Calling the dance will be popular Monterey weatherman, Warren Blier.
NOTE: Please help NBCDS conserve resources by bringing your own water bottles/mugs to dances. Scent-free dancing is greatly appreciated as many have severe allergies. Parents, all non–dancing children must be supervised.
Dances are sponsored by the North Bay Country Dance Society, a non-profit organization since 1992 that promotes and produces American folk dances and English country dances in Sonoma & Marin counties. www.nbcds.org
