All levels of dancers will enjoy Contra dancing on Thursday, March 13 in Mill Valley/Strawberry! The dance begins at 7:30 pm (free orientation at 6:45 and lesson at 7pm).
We're expecting upwards of 150 dancers from Marin, Sonoma, SF and the East Bay to enjoy the sounds of Contra Sutra, a rockin' Seattle-based band featuring fiddle, guitar, mandolin, flute, sax and percussion. Kathy Anderson comes all the way from Ohio to call this dance.
Contra dances are fun, easy to learn, and are always accompanied by live music. Before each dance, the caller teaches the dance and continues to prompt dancers after the band starts. Because the pattern of moves is repeated often, you learn quickly. Very little footwork is required—if you can walk you can do Contra dancing. It's a great chance to dance with lots of partners and the veteran dancers are very helpful. Here are a few photos from dances last summer.
BEGINNERS are welcome—gather at 6:45pm to meet other new dancers at an orientation. Then at 7pm, take a free half-hour lesson to learn the basic moves before the dance officially begins at 7:30pm. Wear low, smooth-soled shoes, and loose, comfortable clothes. Come alone or with a partner—our dances are friendly and inclusive, and you’ll probably end up dancing (at least briefly) with most of the people in the hall. For more info: www.nbcds.org.
Admission: $12 / $7 for young adults/financial hardship.
NOTE: Please help NBCDS conserve resources by bringing your own water bottles/mugs to dances. Scent-free dancing is greatly appreciated as many have severe allergies. Parents, all non–dancing children must be supervised.
Dances are sponsored by the North Bay Country Dance Society, a non-profit organization since 1992 that promotes and produces American folk dances and English country dances in Sonoma & Marin counties. www.nbcds.org
