Paddling from Berkeley Marina PLUS Bonfire at Ashby Shoal

We have an exceptionally low tide next Thursday, December 13. The tide will be all the way down at -1.67 feet at 5:53 pm in Berkeley.

My Dragonboating club, DragonMax, will be holding its regular Evening Practice one half hour early on Thursday to take advantage of this low tide to join Cal Sailing Club on the Ashby Shoal for cocktails, a bonfire, and maybe even a clambake!

For a description of Dragonboating click here:

This event is FREE but if you end up addicted to dragonboating you can become a member of DragonMax (unlimited paddling for one year!!) for $100.

The shoal is about 1/4 mile north of the Emeryville Marina. It will be a very substantial island at that tide level, with many acres of exposed sand.  We will paddle to the shoal (about 30 minutes on the water), spend 30 minutes frolicking on the shoal, and then head back to Berkeley (paddling!!) at 6:30.  We will be back at the starting point at 7:00 p.m.

Paddles and PFD's (lifejackets) are provided FREE.

What to wear?? Clear skies are forecast but temps can be chilly.  Wear layers of water-resistant clothing.  DON'T wear cotton pants/sweatshirts because they absorb waterspray and don't dry out very quickly.  Nylon windbreakers and hiking pants work fine.  Water shoes are much better than flip-flops for your feet.  The boat is equipped with navigation lights but it will be dark out there!  Fun!!  The San Francisco skyline is a spectacular sight at night on the water.

Bring your own beverage!

Thanks so much Lisa for the chance to paddle as part of a fun team to a bonfire and potluck on a temporary sandbar under the stars.

A truly monumental occasion...maybe even once in a lifetime! Not only was the paddle itself outstanding - starry skies and breathtaking light show from our City by the Bay - the bonfire shenanigans with communal food and drink on the shoal was too much fun. We were treated to the sight of a couple of early arrivals from the meteor shower as well. A+ company!

I have some other chores to attend to before the paddle but this is a great offer, Forrest. I hope folks take you up on it!

I'm so glad you've signed up to join us in Berkeley tonight. The weather forecast is clear and COOL! Layers are the best bet when thinking about clothing. Everything you use as a "top layer" should resist water. A cap will help conserve heat (although once we start paddling our heat goes up all by itself!). If you have closed water shoes I recommend them (old sneakers work fine). And gloves! Sometimes our hands go into the water while paddling. Bring a snack and a beverage (some folks will be "cocktailing" it) and a sense of fun and play. Looking forward to meeting all of you for the first time!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
