Motor City Friends (MCF) is a thriving diverse social and support group designed to provide a safe haven for those who have contracted either HSV and/or HPV in the SE Michigan area and surrounding regions in North America, offering the opportunity to learn from and grow with one another in a respectful environment.
With over 1,800 members, we are one of the largest support and social groups of our kind in North America. We welcome everyone over 18 who is interested in making new friends, sharing fun activities together, and meeting others who share our surprisingly common situation.
The Center for Disease Control estimates that, annually, 776,000 people in the United States get new herpes infections.
Herpes simplex viruses -- more commonly known as herpes -- are categorized into two types: herpes type 1 (HSV-1, or oral herpes) and herpes type 2 (HSV-2, or genital herpes). Most commonly, herpes type 1 causes sores around the mouth and lips (sometimes called fever blisters or cold sores). HSV-1 can cause genital herpes, but most cases of genital herpes are caused by herpes type 2.
Genital herpes (HSV-2) infection is common in the United States. Nationwide, 16.2%, or about one out of six, people aged 14 to 49 years have genital HSV-2 infection. Genital herpes is a common STD, and most people with genital herpes infection do not know they have it. While there is no cure for herpes, treatment is available to reduce symptoms and decrease the risk of transmission to a sexual partner.
Genital human papillomavirus (also called HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of males and females. These HPV types can also infect the mouth and throat. Most people who become infected with HPV do not know they have it. HPV is not the same as herpes or HIV (the virus that causes AIDS). These are all viruses that can be passed on during sex, but they cause different symptoms and health problems.
You are not alone.
MCF has no dues and subsists on member donations. We host one centrally-located meeting on the third Sunday of every month. In addition to that, we rely on members LIKE YOU to volunteer to organize events, such as Dinners, Dancing, Movies, Karaoke, Picnics, Backyard BBQ's, Bike Rides, Concerts, Comedy Clubs, Museums, Festivals, and YOU NAME IT! Thes events are as diverse as the membership itself is.
PRIVACY INFORMATION - PLEASE READ!
This MCF Meetup Group is PRIVATE. Only people who have herpes may join. Only members can view info about our group events and other content.
For extra privacy, we recommend joining this group using an anonymous email address that you do not use for other Meetup Groups.
Joining with Facebook could also reveal your affiliation with our group.
You may also want to edit your Meetup PROFILE settings to insure that you "HIDE your Groups" memberships on your profile. Otherwise, people in your non-HSV/HPV Meetup groups will see that you are a member of Motor City Friends, and if they read our description, they will find out that you belong to a herpes social group.
To hide the list of your Meetup Groups on your profile, head to any one of your Meetup Groups (it doesn't matter which) and click on My profile. In that right column toward the middle, you'll see your Meetup Groups listed. Click on "Hide my Meetup Groups from others."
If you want that info to remain private - please edit your Meetup PROFILE settings to "Hide Groups."
Many people also prefer to show just their first name and not their last name. Other people prefer to use an alias. To make changes to your "name" that other members see, go to your "Account" settings where you can delete your last name or create an alias.
