A long day in the saddle following the WHW from Milngavie to Balmaha and back again. The total distance will be around 45 miles and we'll climb Conic Hill and descend to Balmaha, grab some refreshments then head back the way we came. Towards the end we'll have the climb back up Tinker's Loan to look forward to...
This isn't a ride for beginners. It will be a long day and although the path on Conic Hill has apparently been resurfaced it's still a challenging climb and descent in both directions. The Conic Hill climb out of Balmaha is around 1,000ft in a little over a mile and a half, which is steep.
Make sure your bike is in good working order. If you have a mechanical there are no bail out routes. This is reasonably remote riding so come properly equipped with tools, spares, appropriate clothing, food and most importantly a helmet. No helmet = no ride.
If you've got a bell, it's worth fitting it as we will definitely encounter walkers along the way. The phrase "excuse me" doesn't appear to register with them so a bell is by far the best way to let them know we're there. Given the popularity of the WHW at this time of year I'm doing this early on a Sunday to try and avoid most of the walkers. I reckon those doing the full thing will most likely set off on a Saturday, and hopefully those out for a Sunday stroll will still be in their beds.
