Clinic: Top-Rope Anchors

Event Description:

This clinic is primarily for new climbers venturing outdoors with little or no experience building top rope anchors. Hopefully, there will be sufficient esoteric tips/tricks thrown out to satisfy those experienced climbers looking to expand their anchoring efficiency/skills.

The major emphasis will be on knot tying and building top rope anchors using trees and other natural pro. Building anchors using traditional protection (cams, nuts, hexes) is beyond the scope of this clinic.

The tentative plan is to introduce various knots and anchor schemes demonstrating and practicing in the parking lot at Carderock, Md. After some time practicing, answering questions and such, we can take it to the rock cliffs and build some anchors and climb.

Skills required:

Ability to belay

Equipment required:

Harness. 2 locking carabiners. Helmet (personal choice)

Directions to Event:

When following the searching directions on the internet, keep in mind that 'Carderock' will find the community of Carderock, MD, but the climbing area entrance is directly across from Naval Reseach Lab Complex on the Clara Barton Parkway (of course this millitary installation isn't displayed on the map); you cannot miss this GIANT complex. Coming off the beltway on the Clara Barton Parkway, heading west, away from the beltway, take your first exit once you are on the Clara Barton. At that stop sign you'll be on an overpass, take a left to Carderock-Right to the front gate of the millitary complex. Go over the overpass and swing right, the road then turns left then having gone under the "Carderock" overpass you will arrive at a Stop sign affectionately called the "T". Make a right turn at the T-intersection and drive to the very last parking area.Event

I would love to see an above belay and rebelay clinc. Also movement with following and lead climbing concepts. Not that I am ready but it would be nice to see what one can aspire to.

Great time at the Top Rope Clinic. Great turn out 20+ people showed up. Hosts Doug Maiwurm and Marty were informative, engaging, and more importantly not patronizing. The future of P.A.T.C. for the next generation is in good hands if they are an example of the leadership. No exaggeration, the rockclimbing world is safer after today.

This was a great intoductin to top rope setup. I had ample opportunity to practice knots and setup. Well done other than the temperature control. :-)
