Annual Gunks Labor Day Weekend

Climbing:
Gunks offers staunchly traditional climbing (ie gear) with incredibly classic routes at all grades 5.2 through 5.13+.  We'll link up 0800 each morning at the deli next to the EMS in Gardner, NY.   From there we'll figure out routes, partners, etc.  Anyone without a  partner can climb w Bob Graver.

adventure.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/.../climb-new-york-gunks/‎

http://www.mountainproject.com/v/the-gunks/105798167

Travel:  Get there as best you can - carpools definitely recommended.

Lodging:
I've reserved the entire bunkroom (6 bunks) FRI-MON at the New Paltz Hostel in town.  There are 4 bunks left ($30/night) - contact me directly if you want one of these, otherwise I'll cancel them a couple days prior.  As of yesterday there were also other rooms available.  You can contact them directly (www.newpaltzhostel.com) to reserve one if you'd like.

Camping Options:
Camp Slime:  Free w/ your $17 per day climbing pass.  ~15 spots for primitive camping.  Porta- potties near-by.
Creekview:  Tent sites w flush toilets and showers - $20 per day for 2-people.  (www.creekviewcampsite.com)

CLUB WILL PAY FOR A SELECT # of CAMPSITES. When signing up, please note if you intend to stay at Creekview campground

Meals:
Plenty of options (again Google & LS). Can discuss/ finalize each day at morning link ups.

Rain Plan:
Hike/ bike/ explore the preserve and/or the surrounding area.  The climbing, while incredible, is only a small part of what makes the  Shawangunks Ridge one of the Nature Conservancy's "75 Last Great Places  on Earth".
E-mail your intentions to the listserve and I'll try and keep a rough track of who's going and doing what.  If you have any specific questions contact me directly and I'll try and answer them.

See ya there!

The club has not reserved campsite as there are no group sites. Does everyone have a site or a spot who needed one? If you have extra room, please let others know. On a side note, I'm looking to pair up for climbing, have rack, rope and will lead easier lines. I also need a camp spot. I prefer to carpool up tomorrow, Thurs night and can drive up to 3people. Let me know. Thanks.

Also, I think a few of us are going to be up there friday morning/early afternoon looking to climb. Hit me up and hopefully we can figure out partners depending on who's looking to do what.

      August 29, 2013

    • Jennifer Lishman N.

I'm looking to lead easier lines if you need someone Sat, Sun, or Mon. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

      August 30, 2013

Creekview campground update: they have room for 4 more people. Please call them at[masked] to reserve a spot. I just reserved two spots for sat/sun night and 4 spots are left.

I am headed that way shortly. Hoping to find a spot at Camp Slime or elsewhere. If anybody has room for a one person tent there or at Creekview or elsewhere, let me know!

I'm at Camp Sle site #11 (green tent). Plenty of spots left though I imagine they'll begin to fill as the day progresses. See everyone soon.

It's a spectacular summerorning on the Shawangunks Ridge. The red bud, sunflowers, and golden rod are all just beginning their late season blooms.

is it worthwhile bringing a 60m tag-line for single-rope rappels down some of the longer multi-pitch routes, or is everything easy to walk off?

    August 29, 2013

    • Robert G.

most climbs have raps that can be done w one rope but two makes it go twice as fast. there is a walk off from the top (last pitch) of all climbs but definitely not the preferred method

      August 29, 2013

    • Mitch H.

Not every climb but it is always a short walk to a rap although they can be hard to find. The Grey Dick lists all the raps. Just be careful because many raps are on routes. A tag line is not necessary.

    For anyone caught out:

There are additional free camping spots (now reduced to 9?) at the DEC, multi-use area. See map: http://gunksclimbers.org/docs/2011/ShawangunkMUA2011.pdf

    See other options: http://www.climberism.com/gunks-camping-and-sleeping-options/

    heading out soon - stoked!!!

    August 29, 2013

    • Mitch H.

Also it is always worth calling Bill at Creekview at the last minute in case of cancellations.

How many people are planning on camping at camp slime? If I can make it up there this would be my first time at the Gunks. Is anyone planning on driving up Friday morning and coming back Monday?

    August 27, 2013

Gonna take a bike ride and then climb FRI late afternoon sometime

Leaving tomorrow from DC at noon and expect to arrive early evening. Anyone have any advice on route? thinking of heading up 83 to PA, then 78 to 278 to 87. If anyone needs a ride up, I can fit one more with gear, but you'd need to find another ride back.

    August 29, 2013

    • Robert G.

      That's the way I'm going.

      August 29, 2013

  • Ryan K.

On a similar note as Josh, I have a camp site at creekview (fri-sun) and a 3 man tent. Im know there are plenty of options for lodging but, if anyone finds themselves stranded/unable to reserve a spot ect., i can get another in my tent with plenty of comfort.

    August 26, 2013

    • Ryan K.

If you want to crash in my tent, that spot is all yours. If you wanna pitch your own, i have no idea what the sites are like, but i myself certainly dont mind that either. FYI i wont be there till late Fri. night...7:30 at best.

      August 28, 2013

    • Jeff M.

Great, thanks a lot. I'll bring my tent but we can figure everything out when we're there. Also, I'm going up late Friday and will be staying elsewhere that night, so I won't be there until Saturday.

      August 29, 2013

  • Reed B.

I will be staying at the hostel along with Phil J. My son at Ft Drum will probably be showing up sometime Sunday.

update: Bethesda metro (or nearby) at 3PM Friday

      August 28, 2013

  • Jennifer Lishman N.

I also plan to stay at Creekview but I don't need an entire site as I will only have a 2-person backpacking tent for myself.

    August 27, 2013

    • Jennifer Lishman N.

Also, do I need to reserve my own site at Creek View or are they reserved under the club?

      August 27, 2013

    • Mitch H.

You need to ask Lora P. about club sites. Otherwise Creekview is booked up for this weekend.

      August 27, 2013

  • David G.

Who else is planning on staying in town at the hostel? Just want to make sure I'll be able to catch a ride out to the meetup spot in the morning. Thanks.

    August 27, 2013

  • Jennifer Lishman N.

Would anyone like to carpool? I am coming from northern Baltimore County. I am willing to drive.

    August 22, 2013

    • Sylvain

Great. I am not sure how long it take to get to where you'll be leaving, but I can get off of work in Adelphi around 4 and head directly over to meet you. Does that work?

      August 25, 2013

    • Jennifer Lishman N.

Sure, that will work. I am in Parkton, MD off of I-83. Adelphi is about an hour south. It should take a little over 4 hours to get there. We may hit some rush hour traffic, but its going to be hard to avoid since its a holiday weekend. You can contact me @[masked] or [masked] and we will work out the details.

I'm planning to leave from Arlington early (3-4PM) Friday, coming back Monday afternoon. I have room for three passengers.

I'd be happy to share a Creekview campsite if anyone has room for my small 1-man tent.

Trying to figure out if I can go--I won't be able to leave until after 6pm on Friday (from NOVA). Anyone leaving later Friday eve?

    August 21, 2013

I'd love to attend but I would also need a leader. I can follow ~5.8 and don't mind doing easier stuff either. If anyone's willing to take me on, please let me know.

Awesome. I plan on camping at Creekview as well.

      August 22, 2013

I would like to attend, but also need a leader. Since the grades are tough, I would commit to following up to 5.7 or so. Let me know if there is room!

    (2 of 2)
3- I have 2 more bunks in the hostel that I'm willing to give up if someone wants them contact me directly . Should be plenty of room at Creekview (right Lora?).
4- First "official" link-up for the trip will be 0800 SAT at the deli. And I was thinkin we'd get together that night at the Guided Otter (good beer and good food) in town ~2100 that night??
5- I'll be up there sometime FRI with a plan to bike but would be interested to climb as well if anyone else is up.
6- I've probably forgotten stuff so please feel free to chirp up, otherwise I'll see everyone up there next weekend.

hi, should I contact the hostel directly to get one of the bunks you've reserved?

      August 21, 2013

    • Robert G.

yes, but then lemme know cause I need to cancel anything left over ASAP so as to not leave them hangin

      August 22, 2013

  • David G.

I'm also planning on coming, and looking for leader. I can follow up to Gunks 5.9.

    August 21, 2013

  • Robert G.

    A few additional points (1 of 2):
1- This is a Mountaineering Section, PATC trip so make sure your membership and waiver are up to date. If you're not already a member join now (it's only $15) at www.potomacmountainclub.org
2- For everyone new to the Gunks, I'd recommend you drop your climbing a grade or two (at least to start) - the view can, at times, be intimidating:)) and there are classic routes at all grades. Graver

So, it looks like this is coming together nicely. Here's what I'm tracking for open leaders and followers:

    Leaders:

Me - I can take 2 and will lead up to 7's or 8s but am happy to climb easier as well. Lots of time at the Gunks over the years so I can at least point out the good climbs:) .
Lora - studly leader up to 5.12s or so, right:))??
Josh - Leads up to 5.6 ( new to the Gunks)
    Mark - Leads "easier stuff"
AMYL - Has rope and rack, new to the Gunks, will lead "easier stuff"...

    Followers:

Rebecca - looking to follow "easier climbs"
    AmyL - ..".or follow"
    Mark - ... "can follow"

So, looks like plenty of options to mix and match.

Hi, are there still bunks available? I have a rack/ropes and am a new leader, leading up to 5.6 or so. I haven't been to the Gunks before, and am looking for a follower.

Would love to come if someone will partner up. I have never been to the Gunks and would rather follow as a first timer here. Would lead 5.3's with a competent follower if need be though. If anyone is interested just send me an email.
