Trad Rock Climbing: Rainbow Slabs

Trad Rock Climbing: Rainbow Slabs

Crag picture

Description:

If you've driven down the Kancamagus, Summer or winter. Most chances are, you have seen Rainbow Slabs. The 200 feet of southeast-facing, water-streaked granite offer moderate and some run-out friction climbing.

The Team's:

As always the size of the meetup is based on the number of lead climbers....!

For each lead climber we need one experienced belayer and possibly one newbie Climber/Follower.

Its the understanding that Newbie/Follower as at a minimum climbed indoors and has knowledge of the climbing knots and all the gear required & that the Belayer is willing to show that Newbie the how too and keep a eye out for the newbie.

Sign up..  First to RSVP is the first to fill an open spot. Lead climbers may get bumped up, 'cause no leaders no seconds..

Team List Link:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0At0IBRDDzQ8FdE1pYTlVYWNLMURrS2hJOUJmREJPTHc&usp=sharing

Gear:No Helmet no climbing!!!

Lead Climber:  Full rock rack

Belayer and Follower should at a minimum have the basics. If you don't have any of the basic's it could mean you will not be able to join in on this Meetup.

Look to the gear list listed at our group page.

Click  "Gear List - Rock Climbing (Follower)"

Getting There:

We will be planning on meeting in the covered bridge parking lot. From there we will walk along the Nanamocomuck ski trail, then turn north into the woods, following a trail that leads through to the base of the slabs.

Understand that past the Nanamocomuck trail, the way may or may not! be well-marked, and that getting lost is a possibility;-)

Again, I'm planning on sticking around Sunday if the weather is good. Climbing maybe Whitehorse or Cathedral. Would love a partner or 2. I'm a new leader, but comfortable up to 5.6 or so leading, 5.8 following. Geoff Nichols?

I guess I'm in the market for a climbing buddy again... anyone maybe interested?

      September 25, 2014

    • Jay B.

Want me to post a Meetup for you on Sunday? How many climbers you would want? 1 belayer and a one follower or just a belayer?

      September 25, 2014

  • Jeffrey D.

I will rework the teams later tonight to reflect the comings and goings. Can't add seconds as we lost two leaders. I would gladly add a leader or two.....

    September 25, 2014

  • Ken D.

Sorry I can't come. The car was crashed, probably totaled. I have no transporation, and have to deal with this.

    September 25, 2014

  • Jeffrey D.

Suggested teams are posted, subject to change. I am awaiting word from one more leader, if that works out it will change things a bit. Also, I think there are a couple of seconds that might like to try a lead or two. You can talk with your leader about swinging leads, or we can possibly change things up at some point to accommodate you. Leaders will want a 'standard' trad rack meaning cams to 2" and a full set of nuts. You won't place a lot of gear on these climbs, but you will find adequate protection, and some strategic bolts in addition to fixed belay and rap anchors.

Hi Folks, Looking forward to climbing on Saturday. Having never been to Rainbow Slabs, I'm reading the "North Conway Rock Climbs" book to get some information. (1) It's recommending two ropes for rapping down. Is walk-off an option? (2) A number of the climbs are 100' to 200', which means we could set up some TR using two ropes. Has any one done that over there? (3) I have a number of ropes, but only one 70 m. What are people bringing? (4) The map to the cover bridge parking lot posted above seems to be off. Here's a better link: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Kancamagus+Hwy,+New+Hampshire/@44.0071726,-71.2400706,942m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x4cb37773e76750a1:0xc3a6cb5e6b63930a?hl=en (5) I'm hoping to drive up and arrive 9-ish instead of 8:30 AM. To save on time, the book (page 53) says to either cross the Swift river up by the river bend, or to mountain bike along the skip trail from the covered bridge. Any recommendations? -Ken

    • Jeffrey D.

Above link has an accurate route description from Webster's guide. I recommend the hike from the Covered bridge, as it is pretty easy. Not worth messing with parking issues, water shoes, etc IMHO. The new Hendren book is good, also Webster's WM Guide. MP has limited route beta. Regarding top roping, yes, you can, but this is a trad trip. Lot's of top roping opportunities, but trad trips are few and far between.

      September 24, 2014

    • Dominique B.

      I can bring 2 x 60 m ropes

Any one for carpool ? I am coming from Franklin, MA. I need to return on the same day. cannot stay overnight.

    September 23, 2014

    • Sherman B.

Hey Varma, we can carpool together if you are willing to stop by my place in Boston. From there you can park and I can drive up or we can take your car

      September 23, 2014

    • varma s

      Excellent. Let's do it.

      September 23, 2014

  • Jeffrey D.

The weather is looking great for climbing this weekend! Remember the sun screen. I will post climbing teams tomorrow late evening, so if your plans have changed please update your RSVP ASAP.

Lot's of moderate routes on the Rainbow Slabs, so we should be OK with this pretty big group. Presently I have as lead climbers myself, Kevin, Ken, Catherine, Michael and Ben, so teams of two, except that anyone not an experienced lead belayer will be on a team of three.

Let me know if you have any questions, concerns or requests regarding climbing teams. You can click on my profile and send me a message rather that post comments for that.

Looking forward to a wonderful day of climbing!

When I rescheduled this climb I left everyone marked yes that had been attending the Sept. 6th date. Please RSVP no if you can't make the new date of Sept. 27th. We have people waiting for spots. That said, hope to see you there!

If you have been watching the weather you know there is a front coming thru sometime Saturday. It looks like it may hold off 'til mid-afternoon, but the timing is still up in the air. We may have most of the day to climb. I will make a go/no go decision by noon Friday as the forecast gets firmer. Really impossible to make a call today. Seems like we might 'sneak' this one in before the weather - the next 24 hours should give a better picture of how this will play out. Sorry for the uncertainty, but it is New England!

I have posted the climbing teams as I see it now. There will probably be changes before Saturday. If you think I got it wrong, have comments, or concerns you can send me a message (by clicking on my name in the right column and clicking the message link).

Jeffrey, I believe I RSVP's before you prepared the teams. I am only interested in following, however there are two pieces of hardware and some rope that I must aquire. As such, I am going to withdraw my name from this meetup. Look for a request from me in the future. Have a great time.

Jeff -- I'm really sorry I can't make it but I'm swamped with work. Hope you all have a terrific time!

Reminder: No one gets off the wait list until they answer the questions in the RSVP. You can do that by clicking the change button under "Your RSVP", choosing Yes and then answering the questions.

I was thinking of finding a place to camp Saturday night and doing some more climbing (Rumney, N. Conway, etc.) on Sunday in the[masked] range. I'm a new leader, but willing to lead if need be (have all the ropes, gear, etc.). Anyone interested?

    August 22, 2014

    • Geoff M.

Jay, you could set it up as a group thing if you want; I'd be happy to coordinate that. I climbed with you guys at the AAC thing last year and Ice Fest, but I don't get out much.

      1 · August 22, 2014

    • Geoff M.

Oh, and sadly I had a work thing come up for the AAC fest, which is a bummer because it's a pretty awesome event.

      August 22, 2014

  • Jeffrey D.

FYI - I will not be determining teams 'til after Labor Day weekend, because a) I will be in CO climbing with limited i-net (can still join us, act fast!) and b) things change.
