Hike: Full Moon Night Traverse of Mount Monadnock

Hike: Full Moon Night Traverse of Mount Monadnock

Note: Everyone will be waitlisted till I have a chance to reveiw your answers at RSVP. Willing to let the group grow to 10 peep's.

Pace: Moderate -> Fast

Rated: Intermediate

The Plan:

Traverse Monadnock via Marlboro Trail and White Arrow Trails.

The next full moon is on Tuesday August 20th, let's climb the mountain the evening before and catch the moon a day early when it rises an hour earlier. This will give us better illumination and hopefully obviate the need for headlamps altogether.

Meet at the parking lot on Rte 124 for the White Arrow Trail between 6:15- 6:30 PM. Depart the parking lot at 6:30 by leaving behind at least one car and piling into other cars and heading 1.5 miles West down the road and onto Shaker Farm Road and parking at Marlboro Trail Trailhead. Depart for the summit at 6:50 PM.

This is not a long or arduous hike (it is only 1800 feet of elevation gain). However it is a weeknight hike and people will want to finish this and get on home so they can work the next day. Therefore this will be a moderately fast paced hike, we going to try to hit the summit around  8:00PM perhaps 10 minutes later. Therefore I will screen 100% for people that are in shape to briskly move up the mountain without a lot of stops. Everyone will be waitlisted.

Ascend Monadnock via the Marlboro Trail. Eat and drink a little bit on the summit and enjoy the nearly full moon. Descend via White Arrow Trail to the Halfway House site and then walk the private dirt road back down to the 124 Parking Lot. Finish up by sending a car with drivers back to collect the other cars.

This hike requires a headlamp with fresh batteries. The Marlboro & White Arrow Trails may be challenging for some, be ready to hike over steep rocky terrain with poor lighting.  Bring appropriate clothing to sit at the summit for an hour (it often is breezy).

      Thank you Jeff. I understand the concern. I will check with the folks. If they still want to come I will go with them as separate group, that way the meetup is not responsible.

      Hi All, We arrived late, and spent some time deciding which route to take. Finally we decided to take the White Dot/Up and White Cross/Down since we are very familiar with the route. we reached the summit by 9 and spent some time on the top and back around 12. The trip was wonderful and scenery is beautiful in the moon light. We thoroughly enjoyed the Hike. Hope fully we will do it together next time.

    I am really sorry Jeff but something work related won't allow me to be at the trail head on time. I do hope there is another opportunity like this soon.
