Ice Climbing at Kinsman Notch

Ice Climbing: Beginner & Indeterminate

The Team's: Everyone Gets Wait Listed..!

As always the size of the Meetup is based on how many people the area can handle & the number of lead climbers who RSVP for the Meetup....!

For each lead climber we pair you up with one experienced belayer and then we can add one newbie climber/Follower.

Its always the understanding that the "Newbie/Follower" as at a minimum has climbed before but just no capable for leading on Ice and also has knowledge of the climbing knots and all the gear required.

Sign up...  First to RSVP is the first to fill a opening based on experience needed.

Don't forget no helmet no climbing!!! Period...

Note: Kinsman has many single pitch routes, from WI2 to WI4. It is about 20 minutes of hiking from the side of the road parking.

For information on Kinsman, please see Mountain Project:

Anyone off tomorrow and want to give something in the Boston area a try? Fells or Auburn area?

    February 16, 2014

    • Fred

Yeah might be interested, what do you propose?

      February 17, 2014

    • Chris W.

John Ho and I are meeting in Auburn sometime late morning.

      February 17, 2014

  • Dominique B.

great time! hope to climb with you guys again

    February 16, 2014

  • Steve J.

Great! Weather wasn't too cold, ice was BIG, and not too crowded.

    February 16, 2014

  • Steve J.

Likewise, thanks for a great climbing day. One of the shops in town actually had the grip rests I had been looking for, so the next time you see me, I'll be leashless!

  • Chris W.

Great fun yesterday. Nice to meet everyone and thanks for the help and loaners.

Thank you all for climbing. I had a good time. Sorry for the mess up Catherine. I messed up (I thought someone had talked to you before we left and caravanned to the crag). FYI to all climbers: A few days ago, I didn't have the GPS coordinates of the crag and parking for late comers, since verbal and written directions are basically useless. While I don't have the GPS coords for the crag, the parking is located at[masked], -71.7611472. The crag is southwest of that position on the ridge. I'm surprised that there aren't GPS coords listed for every crag and parking on the Internet, but I can't find anything. The coords of the Kinsman Notch ice crag listed in Mountain Project is completely wrong--the crag is but further east, and there is no parking coords either. What is listed in MP seems to be a point along the Beaver Brook Trail. BTW conditions at the crag are really fantastic. Hanging by the Moment was barely recognizable.

    • Ken D.

Something I just learned today: if you use Google for directions, you must enter the coordinates in the search box on maps.google.com, then "search". If you type GPS coordinates first in the search box at google.com, or from a search bar in your browser, then click on the map to navigate to maps.google.com, it resolves to "lost river road," and displays the wrong location for the GPS coordinates you entered!

If anyone want to carpool from Boston drop me a call or txt 774.275.0302. I live in the Weston Waltham area and travel up rte 3. Can meet anywhere along that route.

    February 14, 2014

    • Chris W.

If you want we could meet along 93 or rte 3. Is there a place to leave a car at the 128/93 exchange?

      February 14, 2014

    • Steve J.

Hi Chris, I think I'm just going to head up myself. See you at the DD in Lincoln.

      February 14, 2014

  • Fred

I want a multi-pitch this year and will have my new axes by then

      February 14, 2014

    • Dominique B.

      Jay
For feb 27-28, I was thinking shoestring and something else in the area. Multi pich would be nice, but I am fkexible. I just want to get on the ice, practice some technique so I can start leading things harder than W2s

      1 · February 14, 2014

I've had a busy week and haven't follwoed all the e-mails. I signed up to do Willard. Are we going somewhere else? Top rope only? Not Aratheusa at 8 am of DD? Are there 2 groups Willard and top rope. Jay mentionned Willard/Shoestring in a txt - I'm not seeing that here. Please send one clear notification.

    February 14, 2014

    • Catherine A.

      Ken, Thanks for the clarification

      February 14, 2014

    • Dominique B.

      Thanks Ken. Will do

      February 14, 2014

  • Ken D.

How about climbing at Kinsman? We'll be able to do TR and SP, on WI2 to WI4. Note: this is a great place to learn how to lead, yet has some hard stuff. All who are in my group (or want to join) can meet at the Dunkin Donuts in Lincoln [masked], [masked]) at 8 AM, or at the road side parking to Kinsman at 8:30. The trail head is on Route 112 NH, about a mile west past 118, 5 miles west of Woodstock. The ice climb is a 15 minute hike up the mountain on the south side of 112. As far as weather goes, it looks like it'll be clear in the morning, but snow in the afternoon. We'll know better tomorrow.

    February 13, 2014

    • Chris W.

I'm in. One note though. I do not have tools. I have been using a second set from Jay so I need to borrow. Hope this is ok?

      February 14, 2014

  • Dominique B.

Fred and Steve are you guys also up for kinsman? What do you think?

    February 13, 2014

    • Chris W.

Last week we tried to get on but over crowded so went to Flume. What time and where do you want to meet? How about the D&D just off the highway?

      February 14, 2014

    • Dominique B.

Is 8am at the D&D in Lincoln ok? Or do you want to do a little earlier?

      February 14, 2014

  • Ken D.

Folks, looks like we don't have quite enough leaders (two leaders vs 4 followers), so I'll take at least 3 to do TR. Choices are over at Frankenstein slabs, Arethusa, Lost in the Forest. Or, we can climb over in Kinsman or Newfound Lake since that's closer to Boston, up I-93, and in great shape. We have to decide ASAP to make sure everyone is aware where and when to meet. If you do have lead gear and rope, bring it just in case.

    February 13, 2014

    • Chris W.

Ken I'm certainly in for Kinsman or any top rope. Last weekend I we had planned to go to Kinsman but it was over crowded so we went to Flume which as a fantastic option as well, not far up the road. Count me in.

      February 13, 2014

  • Catherine A.

I'm in, was hoping there would be enought folks to do Willard - it was awesome last year with a head lamp finish - but up for anything that gets me out.

    February 13, 2014

  • Steve J.

    Hi All,

I have a rope and plenty of slings and biners to build a TR setup, but no ice screws.

No preference on location, but I'd be happy to drive or share a ride with folks. I'll be coming from North Cambridge. Please email me directly at [masked] to talk carpooling.

    -Steve

    February 13, 2014

  • Dominique B.

I can bring a dry rope, draws and some ice screws.
Just let me know where to meet you and what I will be doing (TR or follow)
PS I have been to Arethusa quite a bit and Iike it. I have never been to Kinsman or Newfound lake

I am up for anything Thanks

    February 13, 2014

  • Dominique B.

oh. I have never led anything but Willey's slide once.
I do not feel that I can lead anything steeper than that.
Trying to work up to it.
This is why I am up for TR as well to practice some technique

    February 13, 2014

  • Dominique B.

    Hi guys

Are we supposed to wait until we are confirmed before we make plans to head up north?

    February 13, 2014

    • Jay B.

Normally yes.. But its a powder day..:-) I will be posting teams shortly.. Willing to be a lead climber for the day?

      February 13, 2014

  • Chris W.

Guys I RSVP'd but the questions never came up. Seems there is some issue with the questions. I've been out with Jay and last week to the Flume (did a number of the routes there). Prefer top rope and can belay.

    February 11, 2014

    • Ken D.

Hi Chris, If you RSVPed through the Meetup phone app, then the questions may not come up (or it used to operate that way). Please try to RSVP through the website. I just checked the answers for everyone else, and they are fine.

I know the iphone app for Meetup works I am thinking its just Droad or blackberry that it doesn't pop up for. I still have not found out which application is not allowing the RSVP questions... So I just tell everyone use a PC.

      February 12, 2014

  • Fred

Same here, tope rope or multipitch

    February 11, 2014

  • Dominique B.

I am up for TR or multi pich

    February 11, 2014

  • mike

Only been ice climbing once, in a class. I was top roping. I ave basic climbing gear from my indoor rock climbing (harness, belay device), however no more technical gear for ice. I have boots and cold weather gear etc., but I would probably rent gear for the day. Could I still come?

    February 5, 2014

    • Ken D.

Let's see who else will be interested and will be going, then decide what to do. Next week mid-week we'll know better. We're TRing this Sunday at Kinsman.

      February 6, 2014

    • Jay B.

Hike Mike, I concur with Ken.. RSVP and see who is willing to head out with you for some toprope fun.. You should RSVP for the Wait List and if someone signs up for leading a toprope day I can push you forward to attending. You will also get a email that that has happened.

      February 6, 2014

  • Jay B.
