Mountaineering: Mt Washington Prezi Traverse (3d-2n) 10 Summits ( Advanced )

Mountaineering: Presidential Traverse

The Journey:

If interested in a large exciting undertaking of a trip equal to a Alaska trip or something other just as grand. A winter traverse of the Presidential Range is one of the most coveted–and riskiest–mountaineering feats in the Northeast. The 23.3-mile route includes 11 miles above treeline, 10,000 feet of elevation gain, and 10 peaks above 4,000 feet. Rime ice, massive drifts and cornices, and fierce winds combine to create an amorphous landscape–a cubist masterpiece, painted entirely in white is all experience'd in a traverse of the presidential's in winter. It is also known as the "Home of the World's Worst Weather" and the world record holder for the fastest wind speed ever measured: 231 mph on April 12, 1934.

This trip will test your mountain skills for dressing and physical endurance along with all your emotions to complete this exciting and beautiful sole searching trip.

Still sound interesting? or sound like a personal test piece for you?

Then you need to sign up!

You have to fill out all the questions to this trip to be part of it! Your response to the questions provided at your RSVP online is important.

As in any committing trip the experience, health & attitude of the team as a whole, outside, severe weather conditions is the key ingredient to success.

Looking on the web you will find more failures then success in this endeavor.

** Weather Permitting ** Needs to be severe to cancel.

The Plan:

Travel from North to South along the presidential range.

Stat's:

10,000 Ft of Gain and 23 Miles of difficult and strenuous travel with heavy packs.

Route Description:

Valley Way Trail to ridge and path of least resistance to Crawford Notch.

Cost: Total Trip Cost $75.00

Stove Fuels, Food. And donation to Group Fund.

Deposit - $75.00 Via Paypal here at RSVP Refundable: 15 days prior to trip

Final Payment -- Edited 02/13/2013.. None. seams most members of the group have all the equipment needed. which they are willing to share if you help carry... So the final fee which was budgeted for rental equipment is not needed.

The fifth star was taken by the weather, it was a real experience of winter at altitude, white out, snow, cold and wind. An ambitious undertaking by any, steep learning curve for some, but a great experience for all, none the less. Happy to be warm, comfortable at home, wanting to get back out there again for more.

Ok, I am getting calls that some are meeting us in the morning now.. No Problem.. Just want to confirm we are meeting at ( 7am ) at the Route 302, Crawford Notch AMC Hotel in the parking lot for those who are driving there car's.
We will leave one car there or more? The plan is to take a few cars as possible to the start...

Running late is not a option!

    February 28, 2013

  • Tom S.

Quick questions, sorry I've been sort of out of the loop this week.

    1. Are we meeting at the AMC Highland Center as opposed to the parking on the north side?
    2. Are we leaving a car at Pinkham/ is anyone driving up Pinkham notch?
    3. Jay is there any way I can leave a vehicle at the exit right off 93 near you? Think I can get away with 3 days of parking at the Hannaford's and catch a ride with you?

I'm up for catching a ride with anyone, or bringing someone up, but I would prefer if using my vehicle to not fill it up with 5 bodies plus gear, because I have a transmission on its' way out. If I don't hear any response I'll be at the Highlands VC at 7am.

  • Jay B.

Official, I am calling this trip a go!!!! The weather has diminished a bit as of tonight but not a real problem.. Just we had the chance on the biggest day of being a blue bird day on sat and that would have been a wish come true.. Now we will have snow flurries to squalls possibly at times.. Still very doable..

We will see what they have to say tomorrow but my opinion is we are go for adventure launch..

i hope to be leaving Dracut about 4pm be up north and plow out the kamp about 6pm... FYI

    February 27, 2013

  • Jessica

If anyone going north tomorrow wants to get dinner, let me know.

    February 27, 2013

    • Jessica

That sounds good to me. Since I'm coming from Newburyport, I'll probably just meet you up there.

      February 27, 2013

  • Jay B.

Hi folks.. I just noticed some filled out the Google doc with what they had for gear.. Sorry my bad... For the group gear I put in who was bringing what if there was a "None" in the box that meant we didn't need yours for the trip and should leave it at home or in the car.. If you choose to bring extra I am real sure at the end of this trip it will feel like it weights 50 lbs.. Just a suggestion..:-)

    February 26, 2013

  • Jay B.

    Happy Monday,
So long term weather is looking good still have fingers crossed. But its looking real good.
Have the teams sheet almost filled out completly. Once I am done I will share it with you tonight.. We have 2 members now that can not get Friday off. So they likely will be meeting us at the summit or Lakes of the clouds hut on Sat.. People have there priorities all messed up..<grin> Food box is here. Romen and freeze dried also someone's chick Alfredo should show up before the trip.. I will try to source another pair of snow shoes make sure we have Tom covered. If there is anything be it missing gear or what ever let me know. Due to the two folks meeting us on Sat I will likely meet them or one of them Wed night at REI in Reading so they can get the food from me.. If its the same for anyone else let me know I will make sure all are informed then..
    Peace...

I was hoping to travel north on Thursday night. Is that offer for a place to sleep still open?

      February 25, 2013

    • Ragan M.

Same idea, and looking to hitch a ride up there from you Jeremy, who look closest to me. Or Tom, as you are coming from the South of me. Is everyone else farther to the north?

      February 26, 2013

  • Tom S.

Anyone find a pair of size 30" snowshoes that I can use for the traverse? Let me know, thanks

    February 24, 2013

    • Curtis B.

Hey just waiting to hear back from the gear guy. Haven't heard back since I asked him to check last week. Should be able to let you know tomorrow when they have gear locker hours unless he emails me back sooner.

      February 24, 2013

    • Curtis B.

Hey so he said they have 2 pairs of 30" but "they don't attach well/kinda suck." Waiting to hear back on what the good ones are. I'll probably go check them out myself.

      February 25, 2013

I won't be able to meet today. I actually may not be available on the weekend of the traverse either, but Jeff maybe I'll tie in with you about the future date.

    February 15, 2013

  • Ragan M.

I'll try to get there tonight

    February 15, 2013

  • Jeffrey B.

Do you really think this will take 3 days?? i cannot take friday off so i am not gonna be able to make his one but i as well as friends of mine have done this in the winter and it takes about 15-20 climbing hours to complete. I suppose you can streach it out further just to have the experience of another night outside. For anyone who cannot make this one i plan on doing this later this season, maybe beginning of march, in a one shot deal. This weekend i am planning one/two day pemi loop.

    February 14, 2013

    • Jay B.

PS: This trip is the begging of March...

      February 14, 2013

    • Jeffrey B.

HaHa, for some reason i thought this was a week from tomorrow, still i cannot do that weekend because i will be up at Jay Peak in VT with a bunch of people. I may however do it the weekend after (the 8th i think) if anyone is interested in light and fast.

      February 14, 2013

  • Jay B.

Ok, Medford, MA it is say 7 pm... I will bring along the final gear list I will have to build it tomorrow morning Friday.. Super busy today.. Its pretty typical winter backpacking list. I just want to stress some minor points on it. As well as discus our route and answer questions...

So Jeremy you need to post us your address so we can find you...!

    February 14, 2013

  • Tom S.

For me coming from Bristol, RI I vote for Medford

    February 13, 2013

    • Jessica

      I second Medford.

      February 13, 2013

  • Jay B.

@ Jessica Sorry I am a slacker.. somewhere on 128? Anyone willing to let us meetup at your home? Otherwise its here in Dracut little further away for folks but have the space and the yard to set up tents....

Bring what gear you have readily available.. Tents Cook Stoves etc.. I want to get them up and running and check condition etc... Just chat most knowing what to pack and expect along the ridge....

I have leaned away from Multie Fuel for our trip to make water.. So if you have a white gas stove I have the fuel already and bring it out...

    Jim??

    February 13, 2013

  • Jessica

Has it been decided yet where we will be meeting on Friday?

    February 13, 2013

  • Ragan M.

      February 12, 2013

  • Jim M.

I've been looking for an excuse to buy a mountaineering tent. I think this might just be it. Any advice? 2 person/3 person? Hoop or free standing? Single or double wall? I keep going back and forth between something nice and light, and something really bomber!

    December 12, 2012

    • Jim M.

I was just wondering when and where the pre-trip meeting wil be? If you need someone to host, my house is open.

      January 3, 2013

    • Jay B.

Hey Jim sure your house or mine.. We will have it either 1 - 2 weeks before so if there is last minute BS we can make it work out and happen still.. There is going to be a rush likely of last minute signup so too early will be a waste.. Thanks for the offer...

      January 4, 2013

  • Lauren P.

This sounds like the perfect end of season test! I'm really hoping to make it happen...

    November 27, 2012

  • James L.

Have a perfect condition 4 season North Face mountaineering tent. Other assorted gear available as well. Will have to hold for a bit on RSVP'ing, however, but I plan on attending.
