Cineclub: The Intouchables (French, 2011); in Private Theater

Cineclub: snacks, incl. wine.

A huge hit in France and throughout Europe; somewhat controversial among U.S. critics.  Inspired by a true story.

Excellent performances; Very un-PC. I LOVE THIS MOVIE! (You might want to contrast this film with "A Patch of Blue" w/Sidney Poitier)

"You will laugh, you will cry, you will cringe"--NY Times

SYNOPSIS:

"In Paris,  aristocratic Philippe is a quadriplegic millionaire who is interviewing candidates for the position of his caretaker.

Out of the blue, a  rude African called Driss cuts the line of candidates and brings a document from the Social Security and asks Phillipe to sign it to prove that he is seeking a job position so he can receive his unemployment benefit.

Philippe challenges Driss, offering him a trial period of one month to gain experience helping him. Then Driss can decide whether he would like to stay with him or not.

Driss accepts the challenge and moves to the mansion, changing the boring life of Phillipe and his employees." (Imdb)

In French with subtitles. 1 hr. 52 min.  Written and Directed by Eric Toledano , Olivier Nakache

Meeting Place; both the building and theater are wheelchair accessible: We are going to meet in new private theater downtown to which Jane has access (seats up to about 15, projector, stadium style seating).

THE MAIN THING YOU NEED TO DO IS TO GET TO THE INTERSECTION OF 6th AVE NO. AND CHURCH ST--SEE MORE BELOW

Parking is available across the street in the Main Public Library parking lot on 6th Ave No., a half block down from intersection of 6Th & Church.
Parking also might be available on 5th or 6th but the library is a sure thing!

*****Anyone taking MTA , to come downtown, take #7; it stops at Church & 9th Ave. No. (after Lifeway announcement) or main station about 3 short blocks away; and going home, the #7 stops about 2 blocks up on 6th Ave. No. The #3 also stops at the main station if you are coming downtown; and right across the street on 6th Ave. going back towards West End. *****

Jane will be in the lobby to greet you or you can buzz the concierge. Her cell number is [masked] in case you need directions.

***Coffee and conversation in the very cozy lounge before the movie.****

Derek's Additional Directions:

If this will be your first visit, the most important thing is plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early and give yourself plenty of time to find a parking space (I recommend the library too) and find the building.

Also, print these directions or be able to access them from your phone.

The Private Theater is in The Cumberland at 555 Church Street at the corner of 6th and Church.  On the other corner of 6th and Church on the same side of the street is the Nashville Public Library.  On the other side of The Cumberland is a UPS Store, then Quizno's Subs, then McKendree United Methodist Church at 523 Church.  Subway is directly across the street from The Cumberland facing it.

You go through 2 sets of double doors when entering The Cumberland.   The 2nd set of double doors is straight ahead.  You can Press 6# for the Concierge Desk for either set of doors that are usually locked.

After going through the 2nd set of double doors, walk straight ahead until you can't walk further.  You will pass the Club room/lounge on your right where everyone may be if you arrive early enough.

If you don't see them, then turn to your left where the hall dead ends at the[masked] sign.  Then, at the Storage Room door sign - go to your right.  You will pass the exercise room.

You'll see the Media Center door straight ahead.  That's it.  Go through that door and then you'll go through another door that says Media Center.  There are also restrooms there.

Again, print these directions or be able to access them if you are going for the first time.

Thanks and have a great time!
