This 1940 comedy provided a Best Actor Oscar for Jimmy Stewart, delivered Katharine Hepburn from being considered washed up in films after a series of flops and showcased Cary Grant.
"A marvel....A delight from start to finish"--TimeOut London.
One of Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn's 4 pictures together.
Directed by the great George Cukor ("The Women"; "Little Women"; "Pat and Mike" with Tracy and Hepburn; "My Fair Lady"; "A Star Is Born" with Judy Garland, etc.). 1 hr. 52 mins.
"We open on Philadelphia socialite C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant) as he's being tossed out of his palatial home by his wife, Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn)....A couple of years after the breakup, Tracy is about to marry George Kittridge (John Howard), a wealthy stuffed shirt whose principal recommendation is that he's not a Philadelphia "mainliner," as C.K. was."
"Still holding a torch for Tracy, C.K. is galvanized into action when he learns that Sidney Kidd (Henry Daniell), the publisher of "Spy Magazine", plans to publish an exposé concerning Tracy's philandering father (John Halliday)."
"To keep Kidd from spilling the beans, C.K. agrees to smuggle "Spy" reporter Macauley Connor (James Stewart) and photographer Elizabeth Imbrie (Ruth Hussey) into the exclusive Lord-Kittridge wedding ceremony. How could C.K. have foreseen that Connor would fall in love with Tracy, thereby nearly lousing up the nuptials?" And those are only some of the complications!
In real life before the film was made, while being consideted Box Office Poison in Hollywood, Kate Hepburn returned to Broadway to star in"The Philadelphia Story"; "and when MGM bought the rights to this sure-fire box-office success, it had to take Hepburn along with the package -- and also her veto as to who her producer, director, and co-stars would be. Her strategy paid off: after the film's release, Hepburn was back on top of the Hollywood heap"--Rovi

Derek's Additional Directions:
If this will be your first visit, the most important thing is plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early and give yourself plenty of time to find a parking space (I recommend the library too) and find the building.
Also, print these directions or be able to access them from your phone.
The Private Theater is in The Cumberland at 555 Church Street at the corner of 6th and Church. On the other corner of 6th and Church on the same side of the street is the Nashville Public Library. On the other side of The Cumberland is a UPS Store, then Quizno's Subs, then McKendree United Methodist Church at 523 Church. Subway is directly across the street from The Cumberland facing it.
You go through 2 sets of double doors when entering The Cumberland. The 2nd set of double doors is straight ahead. You can Press 6# for the Concierge Desk for either set of doors that are usually locked.
After going through the 2nd set of double doors, walk straight ahead until you can't walk further. You will pass the Club room/lounge on your right where everyone may be if you arrive early enough.
If you don't see them, then turn to your left where the hall dead ends at the[masked] sign. Then, at the Storage Room door sign - go to your right. You will pass the exercise room.
You'll see the Media Center door straight ahead. That's it. Go through that door and then you'll go through another door that says Media Center. There are also restrooms there.
Again, print these directions or be able to access them if you are going for the first time.
Thanks and have a great time!
